"The player remains ineligible to play in official matches during that period, and his nine-match international ban remains in place, but Suarez's legal team of Irish barrister David Casserly, Brazilian lawyer Daniel Cravo and Spanish firm Pintó Ruiz y Del Valle, successfully argued that Fifa had misapplied its own rules when considering the case and the sanction it imposed was disproportionate.

"As a result, Suarez is now permitted to train and attend matches with his Barcelona teammates in preparation for the new season.

"The full details of the court's decision are not yet known, but will be published in the coming weeks. The urgent appeal was dealt with by the Cas in an expedited arbitration, with a hearing held last Friday. Although there is a possibility to appeal Cas decisions to the Swiss Supreme Court, the grounds for appeal are very restricted."

haha, I think this boils down to, it's not about international/club football, it's about protecting other players.

If for instance there was an el classico mid September, Suarez breaks Ronaldo's leg, they'd sue the **** out of CAS(rightly I think).

Basically it's beyond just banning him, Fifa need to think about protecting players. I said this earlier when it happened, it's not just about punishment. If he stamps on ankles, bites and does potential leg breaking tackles, there has to be a point at which they just say, you're too big a risk to other players we won't let you play.

They need to increase his ban significantly each time regardless of where/what situation he does it in, I don't know how to put it, to give him the chance to learn from his mistake as well as show they are doing something about him.

If they give him a 10 game ban every time and he hurts someone badly then someone will get sued saying the lack of punishing him harder hasn't changed his behaviour.

I did think that due to frankly, the insane corruption in just about every part of the world having anything to do with money that barca might have some pull and get a reduction in games served. But Cas are doing the right thing. Unfortunately it really does act as a pretty big reduction in his ban. If he wasn't allowed to train with the team while he might be able to stay fit but the interplay and knowing how the team plays would be significantly behind when the ban was up. Being allowed to train with them daily till the ban is up will mean he's significantly sharper and up to speed with the team.

Well, it hasn't been upheld. Part of it has been - that's not to be pedantic... it's because a significant part of it has been reduced.

It is rather odd because it was reported at the time of the first appeal that they changed their minds previously on the training with the team part... but then it sounded a few days afterwards that they hadn't reduced that part of the ban.

They should have extended it to teach him for wasting their time

(if it was the 1st time he did this, then fine appeal all you want - 3rd time its a bit rich )

I do think they should have because, it's not that it's rich that he appealed a third time so much as appealing suggests he really still doesn't think he did anything wrong, or at least, something bad enough to get such a big ban. What will it take to actually give him the message that biting people isn't right, deserves a huge ban and make him actually learn his lesson. Because 4 months didn't teach him what he did was wrong.

I've said all along, for appealing give him a 6 month suspended ban. Any nasty antics, be it a clear stamp, a punch, or another bite, then he gets an increased ban again + the suspended ban added on top.

I agree. Appealing should be a conscious decision, one that you accept if the appeal fails, your punishment might be increased.

Appeals are so automatic these days without even caring.

Suarez has made a statement saying he's apologised for it, realised he had done wrong, he's now seeing a therapist and promises not to do it again.

Sounds a little bit familiar... almost like he's made the same statements before. That's before you get into the absolute denial and lies about it initially and his apology being.... not entirely believable. I will say I can't actually remember if he apologised again more seriously or if it was the "opps I accidentally fell on his shoulder and hurt my tooth" .... what I would call non apology.

Think it's a joke he's being allowed to play in friendly games. Train with the team sure but friendlies is insane. Cantona got done because Utd let him play in a friendly, even that was a behind closed doors effectively training match but it was with another team. They decided only an internal club match, ie against the reserves or something, no one involved external to Utd, could take place until his ban was up.
