Subaru-powered Toyota FT-86 gets closer to production...

I think you're missing the point a little.

It's a front engined, rear driven car with a limited slip differential (and the option of a mechanical two way diff if you fancy), with little weight and perfect balance. It's not about toys, options, gadgets, driver aids, comfort or travelling distance. It's a car focussing on being an engaging and fun drive.

The characteristics of the car are neutral from the factory, which naturally means a tendency to oversteer. The BMW will be set up to understeer as this is safer. In terms of chassis design and geo setup, toyota have shown immensely large testicles doing this, what with all the health and safety we are subject to these days. Check out Chris Harris on Cars - he has a review of the GT86.

The BMW you compare it to is a great car. Fantastic car. There is no question about it. It's not quite the same though, it has more power, more weight, more toys, more gadgets and it will pretty much be impossible to crash it unless you hit a patch of particularly fresh diesel spill. It will be comfortable, you could do an long journey effortlessly in it and so on. But it simply will not be as fun to throw around and to drive. I doubt it even has a locking diff, so to get any power induced oversteer you would have to be driving dangerously hard.

It's a real shame toyota aren't going to release the stripped back version over here - they are doing on in japan with no stereo, steel wheels and beer crates for seats for about tree fiddy, sadly we get the full featured versions which a little birdie tells me will be available from around 23.5k when it comes down to the crunch.

This is true, and I would rather the BRZ in most cases, but the engine is seriously sub par, not with respect to it being a sports car, but purely as a 2 litre engine.....
It doesnt need more power, It just needs it lower.
The clio example isn't even that great a example really, as that clio engine is mostly a revvy one rather than low down torque, but even that makes peak torque a LOT earlier.
It's not like theres a difference in rev limit's either.

Its a BMW
Its got 320HP
It has two more turbos
3 Litre's
Also RWD
but does 0-60 in 4.9

The has to be some kind of comedic irony to the fact that aside from the BMW badge that exactly describes the '93 Toyota Supra :P

I know this car is designed to follow on from the AE-86 not the Supra (that's the LFA's job) but the way I see it, yes it looks good, yes it handles great but on paper its basically the RX8 with sane running costs (not a bad thing ofc) and given the competition it does seem pretty outgunned performance wise, I may be jaded in my opinion as I much prefer power and presence to cornering like a roller-coaster but I just don't feel anything "special" when I look at the videos of this car and given its price tag its hardly the amazing bargain the AE-86 was...

A fun little sports car you can use every day which comes with a track use compliant five year warranty for under £25k..... seems reasonable to me.

Again (and again, and again) it's not about power, it's about fun. Mk1 mx-5 1.6 is a lot of fun. It's only 17bhp or something but it's fun nonetheless. If power and presence is your thing then get an X5 :p

Lmao, Im glad someone noticed :P True facts though....

I reckon they are holding back on a more powerful version. They would be crazy not to come out with a more hardcore (or just more powerful) version of the car.

Corolla was in for an MOT today so got to have a good nosey round an 86, They look really nice close up, interiors nice but too much red for me. A few things I noticed not that it matters too much as I'd still have one any day...

The wheels are awful, the rear fog and reverse lights ruin the rear bumper and the centre console on this one looked a bit rough where it meets up with the dash

Oh and the Corolla didnt have one advisory on its 3rd MOT in its two year ownership with me :D

Phoned up my local Toyota and there happy for me to pop over for a test drive, even if I'm not really looking to buy, all about spreading the good word.

Sunday 13.30 it is then :)

Undoubtedly, although it could be done through Lexus perhaps?

Think of all those cheesed off owners who bought one of the brand newies as soon as it is released, only for a new edition to come out months later!!

What price point does lexus start at though? I imagine if you upped the price to around £30-35000, you still wouldn't be in lexus territory.

Got my test drive booked a week tomorrow.

Went to see one at the dealership yesterday, very nice it is too.

went into pinkstones today in stoke. very helpful there and they sales guy clearly loved the car. had loads to tell me and was genuinely enthusiastic.

we booked a test drive for a week tomorrow.

their car looked identical to the red one further up the page. with the black decals.

i actually quite like it in honesty.

browsing through the brochure, i think that the orange is probably the best colour.

looking forward to driving it.

Just took a test drive in a 86 GT today, must say I was impressed however the greatest thing it was lacking was some power in the higher rpm's.
Not that Toyota will, but I think having some sort of forced induction on the car would help greatly.
The car is a lot of fun though!

Can stick up some video's that I recorded whilst test driving if anyone's interested

Pearl white for me!

Funnily enough that's the one I'm test driving in a week, went to some informal launch do there on thursday evening and they fed me bucks fizz and sandwiches whilst I sat in their car.

Was it Ben dale who you saw? He was talking to me about it for ages.

Hmm..but the emissions are much less than a 350z for instance yet the 350z is still avauilable (as a 370)...

the 2zz wasnt exactly in the V6 tax banding so why should it be wiped out when those other engines can be sold..? could it just be ina higher tax band?
