Subaru-powered Toyota FT-86 gets closer to production...

Saw my first one on the road at the weekend. I was surprised at how much i thought it looked like a Celica at first glance before realising the proportions werent right and it was a GT86!

Pearl white for me!

Funnily enough that's the one I'm test driving in a week, went to some informal launch do there on thursday evening and they fed me bucks fizz and sandwiches whilst I sat in their car.

Was it Ben dale who you saw? He was talking to me about it for ages.

yeah, you mentioned it on Nath's fb page. I was going to go but work ran over.

i think it was Ben i spoke to yeah. nice chap and really helpful. quite looking forward to having a go in it tbh.

Test drove one of these yesterday afternoon, unfortunately it was a really really short test drive down roads I didn't know so not long enough to get used to the car and see what it's really like but overall it was good.

Steering felt really 'direct' and nicely weighted from first impressions, the noise was good, seating position was nicely enclosed and low which felt good.

Kinda amusing though at one point I was told to boot it in 2nd/3rd, which was good but I felt I was expected to be more impressed by the acceleration than I was, but after spending a week riding the motorbike it felt a little slow :p

I'm planning to take a longer test drive to see, but overall it was good, did feel a little slow and the engine didn't really feel 'rev happy' like I enjoy, but again I've been using the motorbike a fair bit recently and it's hard to compare to something that quick and that loves to rev up over 10k :p

Getting back in the godawful xsara diesel I did notice the complete lack of throttle response compared to the GT86, and then the complete lack of power, but again not the greatest comparison :p

I contacted my local Toyota dealer to arrange a test drive and they've emailed back and asked a load of questions about the cars I'm looking to buy, when I want to buy, how many points I've got, etc. Is this all normal? I only want to test drive it to see what it's like, I have no intention of buying at the moment. Am I being a bit out of order by wanting to test it?

I always lie tbh, they cannot disprove intentions :)

The parents were sat in one the other weekend at Colne Vantage Toyota, said it was a really nice looking car, and they said the seats were glorious. Dad got speaking to the saleswoman, asked if they'd had many people interested, only for her to say that they've just sold 11 of them that week to the same person! God knows what they're going to do with 11 GT86's, either its a 'Renta sportscar' type business, or its someone who will be prepping shells for motorsport or something.

Not out of order but equally it's not out of order for them to qualify the potential for a sale and politely suggest that you come back when you might have the intention of buying one. It's their job to sell cars not to provide test drives to people who are merely interested in seeing what a car is like.

Had a good look at one in a dealership on Sat. Unfortunately our souf London dealership staff were so ignorant that I left after 15 mins of being ignored. Overall, like the look of the car. Good layout, great front seats and a dasboard where the rev counter is bigger than the speedo, cool.
Squeezed in the back, is possible but wouldn't be comfortable unless you're a kid. Some of the switchgear looks like it's trying to imitate the rocker switches in a mini, they're not, just nasty push button thing's. There's also the usual acreage of shiny plastic trying to imitate aluminium, hateful, but as it's just as bad in many Mercs, can't single Toyota out for this. Lastly, hated the rear wing, hope it's a delete option.

Ditch the ripspeed wheels and these look really good.
