Subnautica

I just spent the last few hours on this after buying it this afternoon. I'm playing it in the sandbox mode and I've really enjoyed it so far. I've built a few bases, and a bunch of other really cool things that I don't want to mention in case it spoils it for others. But I wanted the chance to explore without worrying about food, water, oxygen etc. Once I'm used to the mechanics, I will give the proper game a go :)

So far I am really enjoying it. It's an amazing-looking game! I have only had one issue really. The game crawled to a halt eventually. It just went really slow. FPS took a huge hit, but I will look into it tomorrow! It's a great game for £7.50 though! :)

Just got this. Seems pretty good so far but I can only manage about 1 hour at a time because it makes me feel sick using the oculus. Also in VR the PDA is really difficult to read (unless that is just me) and some white info text seems to pop up occasionally right at the bottom of the screen (hopefully nothing important because I can't read it!).

It's an issue with how the game saves and loads apparently. Once you get over a certain size save file after hours of play the game crawls to a halt. I'd purchase this straight away if it wasn't for this. Not sure if there's a reliable, simple way round it?

Brilliant game until you unlock everything. Nothing to do after that, about 12 hours for me. One of the most atmospheric and lonely games I have played.

I've done about half of that and I'm nowhere near unlocking everything! I can't even find Diamond to make myself a laser cutter. I only managed to get the Seamoth last night though so I can go exploring for Diamond tonight anyone know where I should look? I'd imagine that things will move pretty swiftly after that in terms of blueprints etc because of the ability to access wrecks, but there's still so much that I want to do in the game. I want to build a good home-base somewhere useful, so I'm scouting around trying to find a suitable area for that. I also need to upgrade the Seamoth to be able to dive deeper. I accidentally managed to get myself into the Jelly Shroom caves last night and realised just in time that I was over 200m under the water when I was inside! They're huge as well! I can't wait to explore them.

Would mentioning things like the islands be a spoiler? If so, I won't go into detail but I managed to find one last night as well!

I'm really glad that I decided to pick up the game in the sale. It's been an absolutely awesome experience so far. Sure, it's a bit jerky when it loads the terrain, but given what the game has to generate, I don't really have much of a problem with that. Except when it stutters me into a Reaper Leviathan, like it did last night! Omg they're not friendly!

Wait till you can go deep enough to access the active lava zone and meet a sea dragon:eek:

Yeah, I'm not sure how much I am looking forward to that!

I've got to say, for the money, even at full price it is a very impressive game. It has a fantastic atmosphere and despite being Early Access, it is very playable! I can't wait to build a proper base. Up until now I have just been using a corridor compartment or two with a hatch, and then filling it with wall lockers. Now that I have the multipurpose room, it is time to build a better base deeper down!

This game is so good and such a lot of fun! I went off to explore the Aurora yesterday, and found loads of goodies! Got myself the design for the P.R.A.W.N Suit, as well as a load of other nice things including an upgrade to the Seamoth that allows me to go to a depth of 300m. I also managed to find all the pieces for the Cyclops.

With the new depth rating for the Seamoth installed, I went to check out the Jelly Shroom Caves. Man what an awesome place, and I found one of the abandoned seabases which had moonpool fragments, something I've spent the last few days searching for!

I'm really looking forward to loading into the game each time I sit down to play it at the moment. The game world is beautiful, and exploring fills you with a strange feeling of both excitement and dread at the same time because you just never know when something huge is going to come after you! The first time you start exploring and start hearing some of the really loud, deep noises from the ocean is a somewhat unnerving experience! And when you find what's making those noises, it's even more unnerving because you have no idea how things so large will react to you!

Anyway, if you don't have the game and love exploring and survival, get it! It's a really great experience despite being early access!

survive and build games never work without someone to show what you've done and share the work with! why no multiplayer? will there ever be? i'd be all over this if it had multiplayer.

No :) MP has been a hot topic for a while with the brilliant devs. Whilst they haven't turned it down, they have stated it would require a rewrite of some of the game and they haven't a MP team to do such a thing. Guessing they're a small outfit.

Been playing Subnautica since around last August and have racked up 75hrs. Absolutely brilliant title, extremely well supported and scary as hell. I've taken breaks here and then because most new updates require a map regen, which means you have to start over again. There is tons to do in the game even if you've got blueprints for everything - exploring is massive fun. Once you do amass enough resources though things do get a bit slow but that in itself takes ages, especially obtaining Silver!

The last time I played, the Lost River was still being worked on and was textureless. From what I've seen now though it looks absolutely incredible...as does the lava region nearby...

Regarding MP, they've stated that it might be something they'll look at after the full release of the game, but there are no plans for it right now. They are a team of about 27 according to their Trello board.

As for having to start over again, there's a way to preserve your game when there's been a big update. There's a video by IGP explaining how to do this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r97PcLuThHg

And also, if your game starts to get really laggy, you can use this tool to resolve the issue, but be aware that it resets all the node spawns and resources in the game, along with everything that spawns at wrecks etc so use at your own discretion. I personally don't feel it's a problem because stuff is freely available anyway, you just have to look for it, but some think it's cheating because it effectively makes the game easier. I am just happy to get a lag-free game after playing for a while.

The tool is here:

Last night I got my Cyclops built, and I've put some more lockers inside to make it a mobile base. I managed to find fragments for the power cell charger (after mistakenly thinking that the Cyclops automatically charged them, damn it!), and also fragments for a Nuclear Reactor and a modification station. So now I need to find myself a good spot for a proper base! I'll be on the lookout tonight. I was thinking about heading over to the Grand Reef to maybe get something there, but I've never been there so I have no idea how hostile it is over there. I don't know if I want to build my base right inside hostile waters! Does anyone know if the Grand Reef's position enables you to get to all the other places fairly fast? As in is it in the middle of the game world?

You spawn pretty much directly in the middle of the playable map. Base 2.0 location is down to preference and where you want to be going to frequently. I recommend somewhere with space around it, the Cyclops is massive.
I normally make my main base between spawn and the Aurora, but having a few bases dotted around just for excursions is a good idea (not tried it yet to be fair, just had the idea).

Yeah I have a few little pod bases (the basic compartment with a hatch) around frequently visited areas so that I can store things to use later. Things like cured food, water, minerals that are unique to that area, etc. You can fit a surprising amount of stuff just into one compartment if you place the lockers properly! This is what makes the game so brilliant. You can literally build anywhere so you can create a little underwater outpost wherever you go, provided you have the materials and enough battery in your habitat builder!

That's about what I was doing when I last played.

When I was struggling to get blueprint fragments in an area I would build a small dome to allow my man to get his breath back, and had a couple of large bases in pretty/useful locations where I could dock the big sub.

I haven't played it for a while, so hopefully the big sub should be more useful now as from memory they were going to let you recharge it's battery modules (when I last played you had to craft new ones).

You need the power cell charger and you can then charge two at a time. You can build a power cell charger on the Cyclops so you can charge them onboard :) Some people have complained about this because it costs less energy to recharge them than they store, but to be honest I don't really see the problem. Some people seem to be moaning about silly things within the game tbh!

Anyone still playing? I've relocated my base due to some unforeseen consequences of where I built it. I copied a location that I saw on Reddit (see https://imgur.com/a/1CgaK#eR7T8us) but then discovered that a Warper patrols right outside at the bottom, and there's also a Leviathan Reaper about 50m away near the dunes, so I have found a new location on the Grand Reef. It's dark down there (210m down) but I plan on putting lights around the base to make things a bit more visible. Only issue is that I put two water filtration plants inside the base, and only 2 solar panels and now it keeps draining all power to the base. It's causing annoying energy popup messages at the bottom of the screen, almost constantly as the game tells you when a base is out of power and then restores power. I had to lookup online why this was happening! So I headed to the new base and found that I could deconstruct one plant as it wasn't operating, but couldn't deconstruct the other plant as it was processing so I removed the items in it and it just started with more! Oops!

I also bought a new Crucial MX300 275GB SSD to see how much better the game performs on that, and the difference is huge! After the recent update, I couldn't visit my older base (the one with my Warper and Reaper friends!) because the game would crash to the desktop when I got close, but after removing the cache files again and putting in the new SSD things are so much better. I did find the game ran better in the safe shallows area, before clearing the cache and installing the new SSD so the new update has done a bit of performance tweaking / improvement. And the changes to the nav beacon display is so much better. They've added a range indicator on your nav beacons, and the icons for the beacons, lifepod, submersibles and radio signals have been updated and they look way better now!

The game is still a lot of fun for me. I'm working on my new base on the Grand Reef, and then after that I'll start to explore deeper. I also don't feel like I've really investigated any wrecks yet, so I'll need to do that. I just built a PRAWN suit this weekend so I need to start looking for the grappling hook and the mining drill for this as well. But I spent most of Saturday evening gathering up titanium to carry on building my base. I have a grand design in mind!
