Suggest some "war" movies

Don't know if it's been mentioned but "Downfall" aka "Der Untergang" is a brilliant movie and well worth checking out. I can't believe I forgot it before actually, it's one of the best films I've seen in the last few years.

Yeah been mentioned. Brilliant film though. Bruno Ganz is just :eek::eek: as that Hitler guy. Got the film because I am interested in the history of the World Wars but I also speak German a bit and wanted to watch a proper German film (not that kind though ;)).

Recommendations from me:

Cross of Iron (Peckinpah should have made more war movies)
Just gone through the whole thread to see if anyone mentioned Cross of Iron. One of the best war films there is, and one of my favourites :). It has a great cast including Max Schell, James Mason, and James Coburn, and it's about a group of Germans fighting on the Eastern Front.

Another very good war movie is Stalingrad, also about Germans fighting on the Eastern Front.

All of my other favourites have been mentioned so no need to add them here.

I would second what a lot of people on here are saying

Big Red 1 and A Bridge too far are superior war movies

The longest day is worth watching just to see the cast list

as to SPR...its good but has a bit too much cheese in between the action

whereas Band Of Brothers is simply more engaging and powerful becuase the people involved are actually talking about each episode before it starts

its something that because of the real life people involved really gripped my missus..she had never shown any interest in war movies before..but seeing these noble old men talkign about their experiences interested her and she usually ends up sobbing at the end of each episode..she read the book afterwards and cried at that as well..especially when you read about what they all did after the war...it somehow makes it more worthwhile atching when you know that these old boys suffered and triumphed and the sacrifices they and people like them made

much more powerful and emotional than SPR for me

Taegukgi, or Brotherhood in English, is an amazing film about the Korean war, definately well worth a watch.

I've just watched this this afternoon. Absolutely brilliant film. Action was great and i'm not ashamed to say i shed a tear at times. :(

I beg people to check it out. You can get it for about £5 online.

Where Eagles Dare. Richard Burton is magnificent in it and the plot is awesome.

Blackhawk Down. Proof that bullets do not make neat little holes. War is a nasty business.

Saving Private Ryan. The same as above but far more in depth and an awesome movie, The opening scene is horrific and when vets from Normandy went to a premiere one was asked what that scene was like. He said it was pretty accurate but multiply the carnage by a thousand. Enough said.

Zulu. Great Sunday afternoon viewing and a good, if poetically licenced version of the Battle of Rorke's Drift a day after Isandlwana.

Zulu Dawn. Visually stunning and a fantastic view of the Battle of Isandlwana in 1879, the biggest defeat ever on British colonial forces. Over 1500 were slaughtered in a Zulu attack.

Bridge Over The River Kwai. Worth it alone for the scene when all the captive troops arte marching to work as slave labour and whistling Colonel Bogie in defiance. Cinema legend.

Platoon. Awesome film and excellent soundtrack. Tom Berenger is one class character.

My recommendations would be:

Apocalypse Now Redux - a crime that it was never released like this the first time round. Neither is it really a war film, it has to be taken into context with it's inspiration.

Black Hawk Down - good to watch, but the incessant one-sidedness of the violence gets me riled. The Somalians get shot and they fall to the floor, the Americans get shot and there's blood and guts and gaping wounds. Why don't the Skinnies have that?

Thin Red Line - Amazing piece of film-making and cinematography. As a war film it maybe lacks the intensity of an all-out action shooter a la Saving Private Ryan, but as a piece of film it's unerringly cerebral.
