I'm not sure signing Fellaini would have been considered a coup. Signing any midfielder of any note would have been regarded as being long awaited though, due to the constant talk that Utd need a CM.
The difference now (as well as the obvious - Fellaini playing under Moyes at Everton) is that Fellaini is being seen as 3rd choice after you failed to sign Thiago and now seemingly Fabregas. Utd are settling on Fellaini because they couldn't get others - or that's how it'll look anyway.
