Sun cream alternatives?

Thoroughly recommend this one as not just one of the nicest smelling (doesn't smell like sun cream) but also didn't feel gross after using it:

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Will definitely check out the Altruist and Heliocare ones. This is for cricket spectating.

I’m a pale Northerner so there is literally no danger of a tan.

For me nothing beats Ambre Solaire SPF 50 spray - no excessive smell or stickiness on the skin like creams and as long as I cover myself properly pretty much unlimited protection and I burn really easily normally (not the mist stuff, the weird shaped bottle one).

Also don't forget it's not just the SPF! You need an oil or cream with UVA protection too... Look out for this symbol..

If it doesn't have it, it's rubbish.
Not entirely true. Also look for a PA rating instead. Not everywhere uses the same markings.
The one I use is PA++++ for instance.

I use the alcohol sprays. But if it gets in your eye... Burn!

I use a lot of sun screen. And the sprays are So so much better. But I might go back to cream for around my eyes.

Don't cheap out on sun screen

I came across it one day last year on YouTube, some doctor recommended it.

Just found a review.

"Sunscreen Filters
It’s a hybrid sunscreen with a mix of both physical and chemical filters. Altogether, it has eight advanced filters, which are probably one of the best you’ll get in any sunscreen. The SCCS, the European Cosmetics Safety Organisation, has also thoroughly vetted these filters. They include;

  • Nano Titanium Dioxide
  • Octocrylene
  • Avobenzone
  • Tinosorb A2B
  • Tinosorb
  • Uvinul T 150
It also offers broad-spectrum protection. This means that it protects your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. SPF50 blocks 98.3% of UVB rays while the UVA rating has five stars, a PPD of 54, the highest in any European sunscreen. La Roche Posay Anthelios Invisible Fluid SPF 50+, probably the best European sunscreen, has a PPD of 46.

So, if you burn easily or have a family history of skin cancer, you should get this sunscreen
."
I think I will try this next time. I don’t get on with the sun!

I saw it on YouTube then Amazon. Does spf 30 and 50. I only use 50 at the moment.

The tan is your body's reaction to too much sunlight.

"Sun Tan
What it is:

There is no such thing as a safe tan. The increase in skin pigment, called melanin, which causes the tan color change in your skin is a sign of damage.

Why it happens:

Once skin is exposed to UV radiation, it increases the production of melanin in an attempt to protect the skin from further damage. Melanin is the same pigment that colors your hair, eyes, and skin. The increase in melanin may cause your skin tone to darken over the next 48 hours.

Symptoms:

Skin tones that are capable of developing a tan, typically skin types II through V, will probably darken in tone within two days.

The Bottom Line:

Evidence suggests that tanning greatly increases your risk of developing skin cancer. And, contrary to popular belief, getting a tan will not protect your skin from sunburn or other skin damage. The extra melanin in tanned skin provides a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of about 2 to 4; far below the minimum recommended SPF of 15.
"

Education about the sun and it's damage is pretty crap in this country. People see the sun comes out and take off all their clothes :p but if you look at all the other countries that gets lots of sun, they cover up, they wear long sleeves, they use an umbrella for shade.

I remember in the summer, the weather report at night will warm people not to avoid going outside between say 11am to 3pm during the summer due to the heat and sun. Nobody would purposely go get a tan, getting a tan is not a sign of being healthy. In fact, it's actually a class divide. That you have to work outside, like a construction worker or delivery driver etc as opposed to lawyers etc who are in an office, inside. Having a tan is seen as being less than. They have some weird beliefs but the point is, tan is not good.

Yup!

If back in the day they called it a radiation damage/burn rather than tan would/could be a lot different.

Anecdotally I read today that 'which' magazine did a group test and ASDAs own brand came out on top, despite being a lot cheaper than the more expensive rivals.

I just sunbathe for like 45 minutes each side for the first session of the year, then build it up, 1 hour next time etc.

After about a week, like for example today after this spell, you will build up a tan and you can pretty much stay outside for hours on end.

I been out in the garden sunbathing from about half 10 till about 4pm.

Don't get burned and no suncream.

Yup probably going to get skin cancer.
Do you also go on tanning beds before going on a sunny holiday?

I know someone who does this.

You just have to be sensible, I use SPF 15 or 20 in southern Spain, with a minimum 3 star UVA rating.

You have to reapply regularly and absolutely not sit out on the sun all day.. Otherwise you will be doing long term damage to your skin even if you don't burn there and then.

There's a reason the Spanish have a siesta and it's nothing to do with laziness!

Yes that is my actual ass crack.

If you need something for your face (and tbh I also use it on my arms and neck), I find Cerave SPF25 Facial Lotion is a nice moisturiser with the added SPF and UVA/B protection. It's one of thoese that thankfully doesn't make you go greasy and seems to absorb in nicely. And it's not expensive.

I think that used to be the case, not so much now, maybe the opposite. Tbh most people look better with a tan, I know I do. Enjoy the sun, wear some sunscreen(maybe not spf50), get a bit of a tan plus the health benefits of being out in the sun. Everything in moderation is the key.
