Sunbeds!

hahahahahahahah. You know how they say sunbeds use only the "safe" uv rays so they're not dangerous? Once you go into the real sun, what do you think happens?! I just can't believe someone could be so deluded.

doesnt getting sunburnt increase the risk of skin cancer conciderably?
Go on a sunbed a few times = less chance of burning on hols.

I used to sizzle as a kid, so the parents hired sunbeds before we went on hols and we used to go on them a little bit everyday pretty much.. which resulted in me having much more fun holidays not ruined by sunburn.

I think that people are simply saying that instead of having to use sunbeds when you go on holiday you should have used higher level sun protection. I am personally lucky and do not burn that easily, but I still use high level protection and it still lets you tan at a reasonable rate, but safely. Sun beds are the same as being out in extreme sun for very short periods. They are not safe and you COULD get cancer by the nature of the UV rays.

Don't listen to the geeks - your wedding day photos are going to be photos that all of your family have and look at for years after. It's natural to want to look your best. If you feel you'll look better with some colour, then go for it. :)

Tans > horrible pasty white skin. Fortunately I'm lucky to be olive skinned and tan very very easily - however there's nothing wrong with wanting to look your best - especially for your wedding. I personally wouldn't do sunbeds, but definitely go for it to give you a bit of colour. I used to have an all year round tan, but since I only travel 3/4 times a year now I seldom get to keep it topped up. I looooove the sun though :o Tans rock, and if you're sensible are a very good way of boosting your immune system, health and mindset. :)

that is a false syllogism - getting sunburnt is generally not very good for you, but having a sunbed induced tan doesn't decrease your risk of burning in the proper sun. In the real sun you're getting cooked by an extra set of rays, as well as the ones that cook you on a sunbed. You can still get sunburn even if you're real-sun-tanned too.

I'm glad you've had a positive experience with sunbeds, but this is bordering on a medical advice thread as people's experience could wildly vary and you could end up causing someone a lot of damage.

riteoo. Ill accept that :)

Surely by only having less sets of UV rays to worry about is better anyway :)

Either way iv found it easier dealing with the heat etc on holidays after using sunbeds.

Im generally a safe person when it comes to the sun anyway, usually putting on p20 'cream', which IMO is sheer brilliant, and then whacking some nivia or something later on in day during the hottest period(serves as moisturiser too) and then using bodyscrub on a night :)

That theory could be viable if you only ever got your dose of rays from the sunbed and never saw natural sunlight (or saw frighteningly little - if you're an archetypal OcUK user, this might be true! :p). I'm afraid I don't know the ins and outs of sunbeds, ray concentration, safe doses and all that, I just go by what my girlfriend tells me on the after effects of over exposure to the sun/UV rays (she's in cancer care).

Having said that, I'm so bad when it comes to remembering to put cream on. I drive a convertible, and coming home about 4pm in the blazing heat (relative term!) I'm always forgetting to have it in the car with me, and I'm one of the fair-skinned gingebags who should be remembering to use it!

If you are very white, sun beds are not a good idea at all. If you don't tan well or burn easily, or have freckles/lots of moles, you're even more prone to skin cancer too. Also, of course, make sure you wear lots of suncream. :d

Why don't you just buy some of the moisturising cream that also browns you a tiny bit? Sure it takes ages, but it seems to last my girlfriend and looks more natural.

Plus, no cancer.

Because it takes ages to rub in, you have to do it every day, and it stains all your clothes. Allegedly.
