You know, it really annoys me when they bring these overpaid, unskilled voice artists in for stuff like this. There is zero point in Chris Pratt doing this, when the current voice actor for the damn character is still going strong. This is like when they tried to replace Peter Cullen as Optimus.

Wonder if theres enough outcry will the movie get delayed to redo the voice, similar to the Sonic vfx.
 
Visually it looks great, as to Chris Pratt doing the voice well it is what is it. 'Big' movie stars come in and do voice work for any animated movie, and to be fair he doesn't sound a million miles away from the animated tv show from the late 80's/early 90's (the guy that did that is dead anyway).

I don't understand paying vast amounts to an established "star" actor for voice work, unless they are associated with that character. Where I'd the gain?

Why not just go with a cheap, competent, voice actor and save a few million pounds?

He didn't

One website took his earnings for 3 movies released in 2017, Including one of the top 10 highest earning movies (international) of all time (The Fate of the Furious) and concluded he somehow made that sort of money playing Groot.

Charles Martinet isn't dead though and he was the original voice actor from the games. He isn't marketable to the wide audience. If you ask 100 people who voices Mario how many would say Charles? Chris Pratt is more recognisable for the kids and will definitely help with marketing. Also remember Mario has dialogue through the whole movie, Charles was only known for a few goofy lines. I don't think people would want to sit through a 2 hour movie listening to that. He'll do cameo voice appearances though as he appears in the cast so I can imagine him doing his "wahooo" "lettttsa go" while most most of the dialogue going to Pratt. We only heard a little bit anyway and when he said "Mushroom Kingdom, here we come" it sounded passable.

I have to say Jack Black as Bowser sounds great and that animation looks stunning! Looks fantastic visually.

I'm talking about the animated show in the late 80's / early 90's, the guy who voiced Mario in that (Lou Albano) died in 2009.

I should know better than to believe everything I read online :D

EDIT: Can't actually find what he earnt, everything links back to the assumption you mentioned.
