Super Mario Bros

Still the biggest film at the box office this year (maybe MI:7, Oppenheimer, Dune 2 will challenge that).
MI7 is the only one of those capable of doing over a billion at the box office, Oppenheimer is a pretty niche subject matter and Dune 1 only did around 400million

Wasn't Dune one of the first films back into he cinema after the plague or during it? don't think it done to badly. The follow up got the green light. Doubt part gets near a billion tho

Venom 2 was released around the same time and did 500million as a comparison - I think people mistakingly assume Dune was a massive blockbuster because it was a highly rated by both critics and the public.

This conveniently forgets that Dune was available on HBO Max from day 1 in the USA.

Which would naturally have had an impact on its box office takings.

Sure it was very pretty and nostalgia hits dem feels but apart from that there was very little substance.

VERY pretty, but the whole thing felt super flat to me, like instantly forgettable.

I totally relate to this and I think the population has (rightly?) come to expect a bit more emotional conflict from animated features, even those aimed at younger audiences. But it would be false of me to deny that I did have fun whilst watching. A quick grab snack isn’t fine dining, but there is merit in a well crafted snack.

@Nitefly - great review. I agree with you that there isn't much of a storyline to it but I am biased as a Nintendo fan boy and gave it a 9/10. I liked the games references, almost as "memes" - a very over-used word. So I compared Mario a a fair bit with Ralph Breaks The Internet, which was probably Disney's last "decent" effort and that's now 5 years ago! Since then, Disney has gown down the politics rabbit hole, and this is why Mario did so well, as to keep it politics-free.

Thanks! I mentioned this earlier in the thread but I’m really not sure if this has ‘done well because its politics-free’. I mean, it’s Mario, a super hot IP with generation-wide appeal and an easy watch for the whole family, couples, just kids or fans of the franchise. I’m sure there are people that deliberately avoid films because of ‘purported political content’ but definitely not to the extent that it’s become a record breaking film.

For what it’s worth of the recent Disney releases I thought Soul was great with excellent themes (even if the body swap bits were cliched). Encanto and Raya the Last Dragon were fun and worth a watch. Turning Red and Luca were likewise watchable but less good. Strange World was terrible. I don’t recall any of those being ‘political’ other than there being a gay character in Strange World, which is pretty light. The other releases like Lightyear and the ‘live action remakes’ have had absolutely zero appeal - too much reusing ideas and the live action ones feel dull/bloated with their extended run time and have generally been average at best. The Mulan remake is my second least favourite film (ever).

So it’s a mixed bag from Disney at the moment, IMO. It’s a mixed bag from other studios too. For example, Rise of Gru was absolute dreadful. Meanwhile, Puss in Boots 2 is 10/10 and my film of the year (yes, really).

I'll have to dig around and try and find where I meant about Zelda ^^

Also, there were the Baftas a couple of months ago and the Oscars now just gone and I noticed that Mario didn't get any nominations. Barbenheimer had several though. There were also recently the Razzle 'Awards' (which the films need to avoid) and thankfully Mario didn't get a Razzle.

I’m really not sure how I’d feel about a Zelda film… I don’t think it suits the medium at all and is prone to feeling extremely generic.

But, possibly what is fuelling these rumours is another rumour: a ‘Zelda land’ is expected in Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park, replacing the Lost Continent area (which currently has its attractions closed).

A Zelda movie isn't a rumour, they announced it very explicitly last year.

Whether it would get released before or after Mario II is up for debate, I would expect Zelda to take a while as it's live action IIRC and they've only just put the wheels into motion.
Interesting that it’s Arad/Sony and not Illumination/Universal who did Mario Bros - although obviously wouldn’t be Illumination if it’s live action.

And that link just says they “will” develop it. Generally a big budget live action film would be 1-1.5yrs from official preproduction to release so it’s potentially a way off yet.
