Super Mario Bros

I don’t think the Zelda franchise would work as a film.

Link is a totally silent protagonist. When you play the game, YOU are Link. It’s thrilling because YOU are exploring, getting more experienced, skilling up etc - which does not translate to film. Putting a personality onto Link will necessitate making him extraordinarily bland.

The ‘regal’, basic ‘good vs evil’ tone of the dialogue in the latest switch games is mostly excruciating - so I just really, really, really can’t see it working at all :o

… maybe Ocarina of Time across a trilogy of films, if they must!

Metroid is a better fit for film, IMO.
it *could* potentially work, you'd just need the supporting cast to do the heavy lifting as it were - take Sisu (awesome movie btw, check it out if you can), the protagonist doesn't say a word for 95% of the movie. It can be done, whether it would work in a kid's movie is the question.

Wouldn't like to watch a film where a main character is mute all the way through.

10/10 for the CGI, it's a shame those CG artists won't get the credit they deserve for hands down the best CG in any film to date

The film itself was decent for a one time watch

Has anyone called the number or visited the website in the advert on their TV?

Absolutely epic PR that is! Fine detail at its best lol

6/10 It was alright. Very pretty but not as entertaining or as funny as I thought it would be. Not a patch on the Despicable Me's for example. The cast was pretty good, the script was just very unimaginative.

Link isn't actually mute or anything, we just don't hear him speak as the player.

Characters do however often respond to dialogue we don't see/hear.

Yes, although that’s deliberate so that YOU (the player) can project yourself onto Link. You effectively play as yourself… a ‘non live action’ LARP, if you would :p

It makes all those moments of wonder and triumph better because emotionally YOU are discovering and fighting etc.

Giving Link a ‘character’ is not impossible, but it’ll conflict with how we experience the games. So the experience we get from the film would not ‘feel’ like the ‘epic’ games at all, but instead a ‘narrow in scope’ family friendly fantasy film… and I can’t recall many of those that were excellent.

With that said, if they make Link say: “well, excuuuuUuUuUuUUse me, princess!” then that would make me happy :D

I finally saw this today - bought for £14 on Apple for what it’s worth.

It was pretty fun! Emphasis on ‘pretty’ perhaps, as it’s a absolutely beautiful film to look at - there’s a good time to be had just soaking in the animation and colours.

Its biggest flaw is that it’s lacking substance / weight. I don’t think anyone could deny that this is a basic film. I’m talking billy basic here. There is absolutely nothing intriguing or interesting about the plot or the characters in any way that could peak the interest of most adults… but that’s OK, it didn’t absolutely need to be this. But it does stop it from being great IMO. This hit me hard in the ‘wrap up’ scene where everything is resolved in a childish, bedtime story manner.

But otherwise it’s mostly a win. The humour is generally good and the film is largely a ‘spot the reference’ fest. Every two seconds I was chirping in to comment about some obscure reference and my wife (less familiar with the franchise) enjoyed the Mario Kart references. It’s an easy win and an easy, good time.

Bowser has some moments that were a hard miss for me. Jack Black had charisma on that first Tenacious D album but my god is his whole ‘dramatically over sing’ schtick overdone. There was also a bit of a flub where the same ‘mamma mia’ line became overused and grating - I’m surprised that made it passed editing?

Overall a fine time and better than I hoped, although it may be ‘pretty but average’ to adults that aren’t fussed with the franchise.

7/10

Either people are easily pleased these days or I am in the minority. I watched the original Bob Hoskins film in the cinema back as a child and even revisited a few years ago and thought it was a better movie than this.

Sure it was very pretty and nostalgia hits dem feels but apart from that there was very little substance.

@Nitefly - great review. I agree with you that there isn't much of a storyline to it but I am biased as a Nintendo fan boy and gave it a 9/10. I liked the games references, almost as "memes" - a very over-used word. So I compared Mario a a fair bit with Ralph Breaks The Internet, which was probably Disney's last "decent" effort and that's now 5 years ago! Since then, Disney has gown down the politics rabbit hole, and this is why Mario did so well, as to keep it politics-free.
