Super Mario Kart (SNES) Time Trial Challenge

I'm late to the party. I've recently started using a SNES emulator on my PC, I went straight for Mario Kart - the first ever release - however, I cannot get the time trial ghost to appear..? Any ideas, it's really bugging me now!
