Had an online order from Waitrose yesterday and ordered a ribeye steak for tonight. When it arrived I noticed it was quite a bit smaller than I'd ordered. I was willing to let that go as I kinda need to lose a bit of weight. What I'm not happy about is the way it has been cut. I took it out of the fridge to bring it up to room temperature just now and when I took it out of the bag I saw this:

How the **** am I supposed to cook that evenly?
It's 3/4" thick at one end and less than 1/2" thick at the other. If I'd cut a steak like that when I was an apprentice butcher, my boss would have put it in the mince and docked my wages.

I'll be sending a whingey email with that photo attached to Waitrose

That is pretty awful. On a slightly related note I was really pleased with the fillet steak tesco delivered this week, was well up to local butcher standards.

You buy meat unseen?

Andi.

Only because there are no decent butchers in this ****hole of a town.

I normally order my meat online from MacBeths. Never have any problems with them. Excellent meat and well cut (I especially like their 42 day aged beef when they have it - expensive but really tasty) but I ran out of steak and had to get from Waitrose this week.

could you not cut the steak in half, then cook the thicker side for longer?

does it really make any difference? im not really into steaks so i dont know, but i thought the rawer it was the better, your just basically supposed to cook the outside slightly.

take it back to waitrose, they are very good, you will get your money back and another steak.

Sadly I've already eaten it (it was very tasty - apart from being overcooked at the slim end). I will be sending them an email to register my displeasure. If they choose to compensate me in some way, that would be splendid. If not, hopefully they will be more diligent in future :)

If you have respect like steak and meat in general you'd never buy on-line, you'd buy from a local butcher and inspect the good before purchase.

The title of your thread and the first line of post 5 my irritable friend :)

*EDIT* - it was supposed to be a cheeky giggle but you seem a little vexed...

It came across as being one of those smug 'pointing out the rules to appear smart' posts. If that wasn't the case then I apologise for being a little short in my reply :) I'd had a few to drink and my tolerance levels were a tad low :p

FYI. It isn't necessary to star out the suffix, only the swear word itself (unless they've changed the rules) :)

Also, don't be fooled by the post count - most of it (100,000 to be precise) was bought in a charity post count auction a few years ago. Only the 5 thousand odd are actual posts.
