Supermarket home delivery services

I don't understand this thread? Is it specifically coop? Or a moan about people who get stuff delivered?

Going into the supermarket to get shopping yourself?
Pass on that. Takes ages! Not worth it.

It's like 3 pounds to get tesco delivered. That's worth it even for the petrol cost!

I don't use lidl as they don't do Home delivery.

Exactly! I'd only get a chance to go shopping at the weekend and the last thing I want to do in my spare time is drive to the shop and waste an hour, when for £3 I can get it picked and delivered to my door and I'm sorted in a few minutes.

It's like saying 'I value my time at less than 3£ an hour'

It takes an hour plus to find all the stuff. And they are always moving it around.

It really was a class above the lidl nearby

To be fair. Staff were lovely

This is the key thing. Especially during the first lockdown and people were morons.

My local Waitrose was full of civilized people who kept their manners.

We must be the exception, but still do the food shops in person. Initially our rationale was to not take delivery slots from people who really needed them. Missus prefers to be able to select stuff herself and also check the sell/use by dates match what we need when doing the weekly shop. For odds and ends the local Tesco express is a convenient distance when doing my daily healthy walk.

Not the only exception. I do most of my routine shopping in person except for digital stuff like games and audiobooks. I find it more convenient, on the whole. I work right next to a huge store that sells everything I could possibly want for all household stuff apart from food. I walk past the place 4 days a week. It's more convenient for me to shop there in person than to have stuff delivered and maybe have it arrive and maybe not and have to arrange my life around whatever slot might be available. I've had the "we tried to deliver but nobody was in" thing more than once and that's too many times. I was sitting less than 10 feet from the door, reading a book. I was very definitely in. For food, I like to browse. M&S is a pleasant environment to shop in and I like to walk around and decide "that looks nice, I'll buy that. And a couple of those." I generally buy more than I intended and I often end up playing a sort of reverse Jenga trying to fit it all into my freezer, but that's OK. I no longer have to count pennies, so browsing works very well for me. I end up trying things I wouldn't have tried if I was doing an efficiently functional shop on a webpage. Japanese vegetable fritters with rice vinegar dipping sauce comes to mind. I saw them while browsing in M&S and thought "No idea what those are like, so I'll buy them." That's also the reason why I sometimes shop at B&M. They often sell stuff that didn't sell elsewhere because they can buy it for buttons from businesses that don't want it taking up space they could be using for something they can sell. Last week I got a rather odd fizzy pop made from peas and hay. Ever chewed grass and wished it was fizzy?

I also like to work some more exercise into my life. A bit of walking, a bit of hauling a heavy shopping trolley back home.

The worst delivery setup I've encountered recently was from a mattress company. I wanted a new mattress and someone at work said this company had a good rep. So I looked online and they do. 10 year guarantee as standard and you can return the mattress within 100 days of purchase even if you've used it, just because you don't like it. That says a lot about the quality of the product. They're expensive, but a good mattress is a significant benefit and the cost over time is a lot less if it lasts for years. £750 is ~£1.45 a week if it lasts for 10 years. So I was going to buy one. Only available from the manufacturer, home delivery only. They'll deliver at some random time between 0800 and 1900. They won't tell you what day they're delivering on until the night before. They won't tell you when they're close to your house. So I didn't buy one. I bought a mattress from somewhere else instead, somewhere that had a far better delivery system.

We were doing our weekly shopping online way before COVID. I have no idea why you’d trudge around a supermarket every week when someone else will do it for you and bring it to your house. Also you don’t buy random rubbish and you can plan meals properly. The best part is that a trip to the supermarket is one of the most exciting things for our 3 year old as she doesn’t get to do it regularly. I think it would very quickly get old dragging a toddler round the supermarket weekly.

Also, if someone wants a pack of smokes delivered to their door it’s their money, they can do what they like. Who hasn’t paid for convenience once in a while?

I'm glad you said that. I was tempted to shift to an in-person weekly shop to give me a bit of a break with the little one. I'll keep it as a treat instead :D

I did wonder who actually uses supermarket delivery on deliveroo / justeat and now I know .

We've done online shopping in the past but I quite enjoy going to the supermarket. Especially working from home, it gets me out of the house and I tend to nip in on the way home from the gym so it's not inconvenient.

If I lived a 10+ minute drive away from a supermarket, I'd probably be more likely to shop online. I don't think I could bring myself to order 1 or 2 items though!

It is a blessing and a curse. I live maybe 5 mins drive away, I just hate using the car for daft journeys like that - so religiously use Amazon PrimeNow/Fresh. There is a 40 quid minimum order so you find yourself ordering what you need then topping up with things you definitely need but are expensive. Cue a 12 pack of Guinness (£12) or multiples of to top-up every random desire for 1 or 2 items.

We use deliveroo for our local co-op probably once every few days.

I've even been in the position of what the OP is complaining about. Order a few cans, a bottle of wine and some rolling papers. Sure, I could get to there and back within 20 minutes but they also deliver for 99p within 15-20 minutes and I don't have to leave the house.

We do our big shop online and if we need small bits sometimes we'll go to the shop or sometimes we'll order it on deliveroo

In Scotland you can’t buy alcohol in a shop after 10pm. But, you can order on Deliveroo before 10pm and get it delivered when you run out at 11pm. There certainly has been a couple of times we’ve done it when we wouldn’t be able to get to the shop in time in the middle of the lockdown, very handy!

On this note yesterday was the first time since lockdown I took a stop at poundland after an appointment.

Also I picked up some regular paracetamol from the pharmacy - 70p for 32 tablets WTF???

I JUST PAID £3.50 FOR 24 ON AMAZON MY GOD!

That's always been the case, all these stupid named brand paracetamol and ibuprofen are exactly the same as the own label stuff. Paracetamol in Boots is about 20p a pack.

I was prescribed about 200 paracetomal by my doctor a few years back for shoulder pain, was told they have a cumulative effect and should help ease pain over time.

Went to the pharmacy in Boots who basically told me to just buy them as needed as the prescription cost was way higher than what it would cost me off the shelf.

Surely you've not just noticed this?

Pretty much all 'over-the-counter' branded medication you can get that's supermarket branded with exactly the same ingredients and a fraction of the cost.

No its just the first time I bought branded ones online due to not being able to go to a normal pharmacy.

I knew they were expensive, but didn't realize they were that much more until now.

Technically I should get paracetamol and vit D prescribed, but the normal price for both is next to nothing. I can get boxes of 100 tramadols though, but the first box lasted me 18 months, second has gone past 24 cos I refuse to take them when needed and just stay in bed. Free prescriptions, but still not worth abusing that for cheap things.

Your being ripped off.

I pay 26p for 16 at my local ASDA. 44p for 16 Ibuprofen (after discount)

As a delivery driver as well I can say there are certainly a specific type of person who uses home shopping, most are genuine, but a handful are basically just too lazy to do it. The worst offenders are those who live in flats, often ordering huge quantities of shopping and "expect" you to carry up multiple flights of stairs for them. Thankfully because of covid we have been able to say, its in the lobby come and get it. Some are ok with that, but the really lazy ones kick up a fuss and on some occasion have had the shopping returned to the store where they have complained about the "rude" driver not carrying their £200 shop up to the 4th floor for them. That is quickly dismissed as we are allowed to refuse on health and safety grounds.

I checked morissons and theirs is 55p per 16, same 'caplets' at as the 70p for 32 I just got.

Yes I have diseased joints and cannot drive or carry things, but just a few snacks from poundland and a box of pills is fine.

I was an Asda driver in the past, and nothing worse than people in flats buying lots of bottled water. No wait, those buying cat litter! Argh!
