Supermarket Sell by dates

Freshly baked dough products never usually last more than a couple of days no matter where you get them from. That's why you have the choice of stuff with preservatives like warbutons loaves and what not.

Never said that, why cant we expect better?

What do you mean by that?

A supermarket exists to sell you stuff. It is in their interests to sell stuff, rather than throw it away, so they will do their best to sell the oldest stuff first.

A supermarket has absolutely no responsibility to you to ensure you get the items with the longest date on it. They don;t even have to sell you things.

It is entirely your choice to go there, and your choice what to buy. They are there to make money, not to loose money by throwing things away.

You need to realise you are living in the real world where everything isn't done for you, and where you need to look after yourself and your own interests by actually looking at what you are buying.

Why is it every week within 2 days I'm having to throw out food, today we binned Scones, muffins, bread & crumpets despite only buying them 2 days ago & this isn't a one off, its every time within a few days of doing a large shop.

Why should we be expected to check every sell by date while rushing around the supermarket as we have to work almost every hour gods sends these days.

These supermarkets are making Millions & have a high turn over yet sell food that goes out of date within a few days.

Yet we are being told we waist food:mad:

Serious Fail!

Check label and get stuff like bread and milk from the back, not really time consuming!

Jeebus!

The supermarket isn't to blame, you are. It isn't difficult to check dates on food, and it takes less time to do it the first time round than have to go back and replace everything.

I just think supermarkets should provide a better service than they do really.

No its not rocket science to check dates but more often than not they are all dated the same, I cant understand how supposedly freshly made food cant last a week with such a high turn around these big supermarkets have.

by what's been said by many above I should just roll over & take it up the ..... or even better I'll join the dole que so I have time to sort through the shelves before putting in in the trolley.

Probably best :), Suppose we only have ourselves to blame for letting all the small local shops down as well .
Well I've heard some hard luck tales but yours tops them all. Imagine being sold food that is within the sell by date? Unbelievable.

I think you need to stop creating problems that don't exist.

So your happy, good for you.

my weekly shopping bill is up to around £150 a week, so many people are moaning about fuel yet I'm told to take extra visits to the supermarket, we are told we are wasting to much food & we clearly do & we have supermarkets making annual profits of 2billion.

I spent a brief time working in a supermarket many years ago & this http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6676345.stm does go on & obviously still does but I'm making it up ?

Like everyone else I'll start getting stuff from the back of the shelf.

OT

Why so sarcastic in here, maybe the topic wasn't what you wanted to read well I'm sorry I wont do It agian.

What the hell?

We're all wasting our time - the OP should clearly phone the daily mail.

Supermarkets are highly-tuned organisations which work on generally minimal profit margins. Tesco made 2bn profit on sales of what, 33bn? If you want to hate a company, why not hate a company with the highest profit margin since they're the ones overcharging you more.

Oh, wait, it's just cool to hate big numbers:rolleyes:

By doing what, exactly?

Do supermarkets make your bread? No. Do we decide the sell-by dates? No.

My store has a budget for waste. We get it in the neck if we go over this, so we have to get rid of what we can, and, if we can avoid it, not reduce things.

People are being sarcastic because your post reads like one of those rants from readers that the Daily Mail often print. They probably think that you are being a bit dramatic.

So, lets see if I can get this.

You're buying food that's in date. But you buy so much that it goes out of date before you're eating it all. And you're complaining about this.

This is exactly what the government is complaining about!

The answer is simple.

1) Buy less food per shopping run.

2) Food doesn't automatically go off just because it's hit the date. Use common sense.

Just a note, there is a difference between sell-by-date and use-by-date.

Even after both of those have past it is probably still fine to eat.

Sell-by/Use-by dates are quite recent, they only took off in 1996. Before that people were smart enough to be able to work out when their food had gone bad from the look/smell.

Supermarkets have to protect themselves which is understandable in today's culture. It doesn't mean you have to abide by their rules and waste your money by throwing away food that is perfectly good to eat.

thats it i`m off to my local supermarket tommorrow and i am going to demand they make food last longer!!

oh hmmm....thats a point they already do. its in the frozen section :)

Pet hate of mine, just because a company has large profits doesn't mean it has a big profit margin.

Yeah, shame, they only made TWO BILLION FREAKING POUNDS profit.

Nothing much...

Yeah but it depends what their turnover was. People see a big number and go 'ooo they make so much money' without thinking what their turnover is and the sort of overheads they have. A large company with a large turnover but small profit means that it doesn't have much room to maneuver regarding price cuts etc.
