Supplements the debate/discussion thread

Where is the best place for Craze? I remember people talking about fakes floating around etc and if I do ever get some, want to make sure its the proper stuff :)

I need to replenish my stocks. I tend to shop at The Protein Works.

I usually have a bag of The Works and a bag of whey isolate. I use The Works straight after workouts and then regular whey isolate thereafter.

I was looking at ordering another The Works and TPW Advanced Blend whey, and continuing doing what I always have.

Do you have any better suggestions/do you rate the big blends like The Works?

i prefer blends, because they have protein from different sources, which usually means different profiles, different absorption rates, etc.

i tend to just buy one though rather than 2 different types, i doubt whey isolate which is fast absorbing protein, is really needed when you could just use a blend 24/7.

edit:

just noticed the works is a bulking type shake rather than just a protein blend.

i would swap your isolate for a blend of proteins like myofusion

Allow me to ask a rhetorical question:

Why do you think that is useful?

i believe that there is only so much protein the body can use efficiently at any one time, so let's say you take 40g of fast absorbing protein the body may only be able to use 25g of it and the other 15g gets used as energy or stored as energy.

but let's say you took a blend of different proteins altogether 40g, because of the different absorption rates, there is a greater chance your body will use more of the 40g than with fast absorbing protein because the protein gets spread out over time.

everybody's body is different and i believe every person's natural ability to use x amount of protein over a period of time varies.

therefore i think it's better to spread protein intake as much as possible rather than take it all in one go, as more of it will be used for energy than repairing muscle.

Unless I'm misinformed I think the theory of 'optimal absorbtion' is shaped like a bell curve in that the bodies effeciency at synthesising protein drops over a certain amount but that's not to say anything over this amount isn't utilised at all.

so all the protein you ever intake is used efficiently? regardless of whether you took 200g within 10 minutes or 200g spread out over 24 hours?

why do people take slow absorbing proteins before sleep then?
Countering my point with a ridiculous extreme is pretty silly.

People take slow absorbing proteins before bed because they don't understand the science.

Your picture of this situation is lacking significant detail.

What is "protein utilisation"?

You need to look at gastric emptying, digestibility, absorption and what effect eating your protein as part of a balanced meal has on these.

Then you need to look at the change in muscle protein synthesis this quantity of protein induces, not forgetting that a single figure is not useful because it completely ignores temporal factors.

so protein absorption rates will play a factor in how efficiently that protein is used? as well as other things.

therefore that is why i prefer a blend.

Stop all this science talk, Hatter needs to know what to buy

What?

No.

Why would I disagree with your point, only to expand on my argument with stuff that supports your point? Why wasn't you're first instinct to suspect that I was suggesting something else? I don't even...

I was hoping you were actually going to look some of that up.

If you don't know why you need anything other than just plain whey and some kind of simple carb source (for post workout) then that is all you need. Isolate is typically pointless, and most blends with lots of ingredients are not worth the money over something like whey and dextrose.

what would you recommend for someone who is lactose intolerant?

i swapped milk for soya, almond or hazelnut substitute's (whichever's cheapest usually) as they are a lot more expensive than milk, usually £1.20 - £1.70 a litre.

i havent bought any protein in like 2-3 year's but the last time i did it was myofusion but the price has now practically doubled since i last bought it.

just started back on the weights a few weeks ago after switching to running, so will be wanting a shake when i dont feel hungry enough to have a meal.
