globalisation is what got us into this mess. its why i have to buy goods from the other side of the world and not british as the corporations can source ridiculously priced goods from poorer nations keeping them poor and our producers stuck.

This country was built on back breaking low paid exploited work during Industrial Revolution by coal and cotton empires, engineering, building and manufacturing is in the British blood.

To lose plants and jobs is a crying shame but to foreign cheaper work, is almost a desecrating our history. We are a great country that has done so much, we can overcome anything. We need to get the cost of living down, so we can all enjoy life and work and have a some fun and the odd luxury. I bet their are families in the UK that pay all their wage to foreign owned conglomerates.

We cant all be bankers in Canary Wharf.

How can you not have the skills to learn skills?

Basically what you're saying is people who are not willing to learn or educate themselves deserve an honest days pay.

I know there are people who aren't bothered about learning, maybe you are one of them I don't know. They don't deserve anything if they wish to progress and live in a lifestyle of the western world, one day, someone will do the same job for less. This day has come for a lot of people.

Think about how manufacture and assembly of a lot of Ford vehicles moved to mainland Europe? Is it because workers demanded 'only' an honest wage while they worked so hard?

The same british people who created this situation are now basking in the ruin they see.

I see no ruin, but they obviously do.

Oh by the way, Total is a FRENCH company

I hope you see the point i'm making with that last line.

Let them up sticks and go set up a plant in Italy and see what its like to live and work in Italy, they really do love immigrants in Italy.

I don't see whats wrong with it to be honest, I work for a US Manufacturer, they give so many jobs in the UK to British people, as do Total. A change in contract to another company (foreign or not) doesnt seem like much at all to me. Its expected. A foregn company invested here, they have the right to change if circumstances and costs change.

not all work requires a skill you know, some work is just hard honest manual labour.

what is it with the demonisation of the british worker not all british workers are lazy? not all foreign workers are these super efficient highly skilled polite good people who come here for the good of our country

Then surely it is not going to be desirable to do that job?

Therefore why can't that same person have a skilled job which generally means higher wages, which in turn gives a better quality of life?

Thats not what I was making out, I was just annoyed how you've just labelled some people 'unable' to learn. Its just not true.

Please also recognise the country that we live in, and the age we live in, this country is becoming less and less dependant on sectors which include manual labour jobs. We are a highly skilled advanced nation. We are the best (imo) at technological advances, take military and missile companies as an example.

There will be less and less manual labour jobs, and every time a contract expires its going to go to the cheapest applicant. It's manual labour, what does the company have to gain from hiring a certain nationality?

Personally I think everyone has a right to a job - as to keeping it that partly is upto them doing a good enough job... but thats another matter... society/the environment we live in was conditioned long before we were born to make it like it is, requiring a job to live properly and so forth.

We are so used to the conditionings that we never question them, never see our own slavery.

If anything my experience tells me that the stereotype has some truth. We work closely with our offices in Germany and they just seem to do a higher standard of work than our offices. One thing I will say though, our managers are very good.

Surely that isn't rational? If you give that worker a job, then you have:

1) the opportunity cost of them doing another more skilled job
2) the opportunity cost of higher wages
3) reduction in spending power through:
i) increased manufacturing costs for everyone in the economy and;
ii) weaker spending in the economy due to the lower wages.

I don't think its an argument about what individual people like doing, it is more a focus on what is best for the country as a whole... The "British job for British Workers" flies in the face of all this.

I'm happy to sit at home and watch TV, however I know that its not going to get me anywhere. I know that I need to push myself further to be able to guarantee myself a good quality of life - therefore that is why I'm investing in myself through gaining the skills/qualifications.

I'd say that jobs should also be allocated to the most efficient person doing it.

you a manager by any chance?

i work for a multi national company and the standard of work out of our dept far out shines that from italy,germany,malayasia only USA have anywhere near the level of skill and expertise

By the way, you're right, nothings wrong with manual labour. But if what you said is true? not able to be educated, cant be taught new skills? THAT I am ashamed of, to have people who are unable to learn, moaning about 'johnny foreigner'.

Nope I'm not a manager, just an analyst. Haha opposite for us, everywhere BUT the US show complete competency. For us the UK used to be the Europe HQ, that has slowly moved over to Germany.
