Surveillance of the internet for UK

What's the point of this? Anyone doing anything illegal will use vpns and other means to get round it anyway.

Another Waste government money. Terrorists, hackers, drug dealers, pedo bears aren't generally stupid and wouldn't use normal channels anyway.

They can check up on me all they want I use eBay, Amazon, Ocuk, Asda and Reddit. I don't download movies as you wouldn't download a car would you :D

Is there anything to "They have a patchy track record with hiding being hacked etc" other than the incident in which one server in one country was incorrectly configured and might (or might not) have leaked minimal information about which websites were accessed by Nord customers using that particular server at that time, maybe?

Customer activity is not 'minimal information' tbf. Hiding your browsing history is a major reason to pay for a VPN in the first place. If it was a 'minor' mishap why hide it for so long? More to the point do you seriously trust a 'privacy' company who can't set up a server correctly, and then hide their ineptitude from you? LOL

They are a shady company all around, with little regard for customers. Tons of examples. Disable auto-renew (at >£200 versus the original cheap 'hook' price) and lose priority support, malware protection and other features you actually already paid for. They are based in Cyprus not Panama, but don't like this being pointed out. There are many reasons outside the scope of this thread why Nord would not top my list for a reputable supplier, and a quick search will avail you of many of them.

I don't subscribe to the whole conspiracy theory thing at all, but I suspect the Government are jealous of all the information Facebook, Google, etc have on people and want a slice of it (probably to sell on to third parties).

It's being sold as a way to protect people from terrorists etc, but like you say, literally anyone who isn't stupid who is going anything remotely dodgy will be using much more secure communication methods that this wouldn't be able to pick up.

The general public don't necessarily realise this, so may support it because they genuinely believe it's for their good, when it isn't.

What makes you think all of the surveillance is aimed at criminals? Facebook and other big tech are absolutely obsessed with collecting private information and there's a lot of criminality occurs on their platforms that goes ignored. Maybe they just want to collect embarrassing information about UK politicians so that they can control UK politics? have you thought of the consequences of people with a lust for power having potentially life ruining information about people in important roles in government, civil services and business?

It didn't. Someone in here started talking about government putting cameras in every room in every house. :D

The shameful thing is though if the government announced such a measure tomorrow in order to monitor social distancing or whatever justification they can invent to justify it many people would happily surrender their right to privacy rather than fight to protect it.

It's illegal to do drugs whilst on the toilet or in the shower but that doesn't mean you should have to prove you aren't doing so by volunteering like a moron to have a camera fitted.
