Swapping from 5800x to 5700x3d….nuts or not

This is a tech site, logic doesn’t always come into it, had the 5800x for years want something new and the tech I want is months out, feel same about my 3800fe

The % increase would paint a clearer picture of the gains you'd expect, 10-20fps doesn't mean anything on it's own. The alternative doesn't have to be spending £600 on AM5, he could just keep the 5800X because the gains would be extremely dependant on the title, and for general usage, productivity it's worse.

All this is assuming the 1% lows are actually causing a problem that the 5700X3D is gong to noticeably fix.
General usage / productivity is surfing, streaming and the odd bit of excel/word, can’t believe I’ll notice anything

Just did this swap as I got the 5700X3D for only £125 so essentially a free upgrade, was it worth it in terms of performance? not really but then I did have my ram super tuned so it probably diminished the uplifts a bit vs just a standard XMP set up, CPU power usage and temps were improved quite a bit.

5800X vs 5700X3D at 1440p with a 4090.

I just got my delayed one today. Got a 5800x and 3080. I know it'll be a minor upgrade but it'll be interesting to see how much of a difference the 1% low uplift makes in practice. For me that's running about the odd open world game.

Had my 5700x3d for a few weeks now.

Going from a 5600x there is a noticeable stability in average frames, peak FPS doesn't appear too affected but then I haven't seen any of those annoying random fps dips that sometimes happens with games.
One thing I found was the chip didn't like running 1900mhz Infinity Fabric so have had to retweak my RAM timings but now ended up with tighter settings. Added a small 3% overclock on the BCLK to get it close to 1900mhz 1:1 memory and infinity which also lifts the chip to a boost of 4.17GHz.

Still need to add more CO but these 5700x3d's run cool and less power hungry overall as my system idle's even lower than the 5600x.

Speaking of open world games, our Fallout 4 CPU benching thread has plenty of 5800X3D but no 5700X3D results:
Would be nice if someone with a 5700X3D were to add to that - or even just general impressions with Fallout 4 or Skyrim.

It's honestly such a good resource. With Fallout 4 being as poorly made as it is, if your rig runs it well then you're pretty damn good for gaming in general.

I'm just about to do the same swap, my 5700x3d should be delivered in the next few days. I doubt I'll do much more than a bit of CO tuning tbh, just interested to see if it has much effect smoothing out the lows. Plus of course we all get a little boost in peformance once 24H2 hits. If its sucessful then l'll get another and do my sons PC too, hes a big Baulders gate fan it looks to love the extra cache. Its a shame you can't do the PBO +200Mhz thing on these, seems like most people universally can run them -30mv all core.

Make sure you turn off any previous PBO as otherwise it screws with the multiplier and keeps it stuck at 3600mhz. At least that's what happened with my board, B550 Steel Legend.

I did -30 CO. Can't face the other stuff. Interested to know what other general settings people use.

Going back to the opening post. It is a bit mad. From what I can see, from the same source as the 5700x3d, you can get a 7500f for just over £100, mobo £110 UK based, 32gb ram £90 from here. £300.

Selling CPU should net £80 (min. 5600 is £60 odd used), mobo £50 (no idea on model) and ca £25 for 16gb of good ddr4. Call it £150.

The 7500f is similar to the 7600 which is a bit better than the 5700x3d.

It's a good shout, I was tempted to do something similar myself and it'd probably have been not far off the same price in the end if not for the faff of selling (£141 5700X3D here)

Tbh I've been considering swapping my 5950X for one, would pain me to lose half the core count though, despite not doing anything productivity based all that often... will probably just wait and then somehow justify a 9950x3D to myself after a few drinks some time

£220 for the chip, maybe ~ £100 depending on your mobo and RAM gives you £300 for AM5... for gaming it'd be good but then task manager wouldn't look as cool

I didn't hesitate swapping my 5900X for a 5800X3D but that was nearly 2 years ago. The upgrade was very noticeable in a number of games, in particular it rid me of occasional drops in minimum FPS, and I'm very happy with the purchase, however I think you need to consider how long before you do a full upgrade. I'd say it's worth it if you hold out for whatever generation of CPUs come after the 9000X3Ds and Core Ultras.
