Switching to SSD. Large vs 2 small's

No problems.

I'm a grey beard myself (both metaphorically and literally!). So can appreciate how things have changed over the years. Any time soon I'll be switching into old codger mode and reminiscing about the good old days of punched cards and paper tape readers :):):)

LOL :D

I just checked in the bios and AHCI is enabled by default, while I was in I looked at legacy too and thats enabled as well.

Soooo, going with that, are we ready to rock and roll then, yea ? ;)

Go for it....

I'm just waiting till tomorrow afternoon to see if ocUK have the Vertex 4 on special offer.

I've just bought the 3.5in USB3 version of that enclosure for the 1TB HD that my new Vertex 4 replaced. Nice box and it benchmarks (HD Tune) on USB3 almost as good as when connected on SATA2 port on mobo.

MikeO or if hes not available then anyone else :)

How does this look (see photo )

Was very simple by following your instructions :) ;)

Hope its done good and please correct me and tell me if its wrong (which I hope not , lol).

Once I got everything done and reinstalled etc, this thing is an absolute flying machine now man, cant get much better really :)

Windows boots in under 10 seconds etc and windows based apps start nearly instantly, excellent :)

was wondering another thing, is there any other options I should turn on or off to make it even better mate, just wondering ? (and thats if i have my firmware update done correctly as in the picture and yet to be confirmed).

Thanks.

As wazza300 says "looks fine to me".

As to "SSD tweaks"... I would not bother if it was me, others may disagree.

If you are going to use it as a boot drive, then just install Windows as usual and let Windows handle partitioning etc (IE. no need to pre-format).

At some point after install, run Windows WEI and then check "de-frag" turned off for this drive. Run something like AS SSD to check partition alignment OK (no reason it should not be). Run something like Crystal Disk info to check TRIM enabled (or check Windows registry). Paranoid I am (quite happy to admit it).

If you are going to benchmark the drive. Maybe do it "before" installing Windows. That way you can Secure Erase the drive prior to Windows install (write amplification is the bane of all flash based products!). Though sounds like you've already installed Windows... no problem.

And then sit back and enjoy.

yes, windows already installed etc and its like a flying maching man :) wise choice thanks to you :)

when i did install windows i just done the normal quick format for the sake of it, plus i have always had the built in windows defrag rubbish disabled on my drives anyway, i use another third party bit of software that is much better and quicker anyway, so thats sorted ;)

Cant beleive how fast this drive is man, its amazing man ;)

p.s
thanks to wazza too mate :)
thanks, mate,

Each to their own. But never been convinced myself that turning the pagefile off is a good idea. Doesn't even guarantee that Windows wont create a temporary one if it needs it!

See http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/f...BC-for-OCZ-SSD&p=567576&viewfull=1#post567576 for comments from OCZ.

And this is a very good article (though a bit long winded):
http://www.tweakhound.com/2011/10/10/the-windows-7-pagefile-and-running-without-one/

In the end it's up to the individual though. depends on how tight for space you are as well.

Thanks passey and mikeo :)

What would I use to test the speed of this drive please ?

something pretty easy to use and direct to the point, it doesnt need to have all the fancy things that I aint interested in anyway, just want to check its running at an acceptable speed going by the specs from the ocz website etc. thats all.

Thanks again :)

p.s
what kind of speeds would I be looking at getting anyway now that windows and all the drivers and all the other normal stuff is on it now, still only used 41GB though :)
