Sydney knife attack

Your life or his, which would you choose.
The US is a very dangerous place, the officers are constantly under threat.

The acorns life or mine? Seriously the guy had no business even owning a gun, let along carrying one with the authority of the police. There are endless cases of police opening fire and killing people who in no way deserved to die or be shot and just be injured. Sorry but I don't want our police carrying weapons unless they have been trained to a very high standard. Over there they just hand out guns to any idiot.

Has a name been published yet? They've had his body over 12 hours and stated within an hour of it happening that they knew he was known by police but was not a terror threat.

Joel Cauchi, 40, walked through the crowded Westfield Bondi Junction complex on Saturday afternoon, fatally wounding five women and a man.

A nine-month-old baby was among several others injured and remained in a "serious but stable" condition on Sunday, police said.

Authorities say the attack was most likely "related to the mental health of the individual involved".

Toowoomba, Queensland. Local man, mental health problems since the age of 19 (schizophrenia). Known to police, but never charged with a crime before.

Sadly seems to be a growing issue in a number of countries. We know people are mentally ill. We know what those people can do in an instant. We just don't know how/have the societal will to prevent it without potentially locking away an innocent person.

I don't know what the mental health provision is like in Australia, certainly in the UK it's suffering from austerity cuts but ultimately, even if the service is there you can't force people to remain engaged (certainly in the UK anyway). We just had something similar last year in Nottingham who killed three, known to police and MH services but refused to engage with treatment. It's a difficult situation unless you start sectioning people, including those that may never pose a threat.

It just proves that no matter how safe or open minded or culturally diverse or closed minded a country is, bad **** still happens. People are always going to be the weak point in any system.

People snap, get influenced, or just something happens that make them go completely bat **** crazy.

Not making excuses at all, but this will keep happening as long as people exist. With the internet and the speed at which people can be exposed to information keeps increasing we'll just keep having this happening. Even before the internet and social media this happened it just took longer to brew.

The killer's family has confirmed that he did receive psychological treatement.

Addressing media just after 1pm on Sunday, Queensland Police Assistant Commissioner Roger Lowe said officers had been with Cauchi’s family since last night, breaking the news and collecting information for their investigation.

Assistant Commissioner Lowe said police had learned from the family that Cauchi had been sleeping in a vehicle or at a backpacker hostel before the attack in Sydney, but he was not in regular contact with his parents.

He said Cauchi had been diagnosed with a mental illness at the age of 17, and that his mental health had declined in the last few years.

A statement from Queensland Health confirmed Cauchi had been treated for mental health issues more than a decade ago, but “his care was transferred to a psychiatrist in the private sector in 2012”.

Twitter was going mad saying he was Muslim but apparently he's a Jew.

One third of Twitter was going mad saying he was Muslim, the other third was going mad saying he's a Jew. Both were lying, but people chose whichever lie suited their prejudice, as you have done. Joel Cauchi is neither a Jew nor a Muslim, and Cauchi is an Italian surname.
