Symbian 3 + Nokia N8 = WOW!

Nope, it's in the same market space as the HTC legend (adjust price for the headline grabbing 12mp camera) The N9 will be compared to those phones.

?400 seems about right considering the legend is ?360ish (pricing always depends on popularity, the desire was only ?350 when the iP4 released now its gone back to ?400+ again )

Regardless of price it's just an arm11 powered phone. Nokia wouldn't market it against all those cortex A8 devices.

Edit: I hope the Desire HD is ?410. :)

I guess HTC seeing the 4 week wait apple have for the I4 they saw the opportunity to slap a bit of price on as some might not be willing to wait, from what i been reading the Desire HD is basically the same phone as the Evo in the USA.

what does android do better than symbian?

i want a small, good looking phone, with a decent camera. i dont care if the icons are rectangular or not. i'll be using it for making calls, texting and pictures. im not interested in apps, the only one i use is the converter to change weights, volume and length.

The Nokia N8 is right up your street then mate the camera looks really good, some shots below of what you can expect mega camera on this phone i been reading its not just the 12mp its the biggest sensor ever on a mobile phone and is on par with a 5-8mp proper camera sensor and the fact it has a xenon flash makes for a cracker.

My GF has the N97, (my old and last nokia) what a POS that is really....

Android is better in everyway. Bar maybe the Nokia's camera is a little better, maybe...

They look great! What size sensor is it?

Nevermind google says 1/1.83"! Wow, that's larger than most point and shoot cameras
Top end enthusiast compacts (LX3, S90 etc) have a 1/1.6" sensor by comparison (and it's around 4? times larger than the iPhone 4s 1/1.32" sensor)
It's a shame they chased a large megapixel figure, imagine how good it would've been at 8mp-10mp.

Still, this looks like the first real p&s replacement.

I'm on the N900 and am disappointed that MeeGo hasn't been developed further.

That said, my missus has the 5800 and it's development has been startling. The phone has flash lite now and can do most of the stuff my N900 does already. Full browsing on most websites without bother, good uploading, supports landscape and portait browsingand qwerty too. Add in a very very good free sat-nav and I can't see why people whine about Symbian so much. Her phone is plenty quick enough.

I have also seen an N8 development model from an aquaintence who works for Nokia and it's slick enough. So what if things are rectangular - the phone is rectangular!!! My main worry with the N8 is the 1200mAh battery. The 1320mAh in the N900 is barely enough and altough the CPU is slower, even so it would be a day max of decent use.

Have you used iOS or Android? I upgraded from a 5800 to a Galaxy S and Android is so much better.

I think the Nokia 5800 was a decent phone, but the difference between a Desire running Android, like night and day. I sold my 5800 for £30, i do miss the external speakers and battery life thou. I deffo want to have a hold and play with this new nokia N8. Im a bit obsessed with phones atm :p

Forget the N8 lol, the N9 was leaked to have the following specs and run meego:

-4 inch OLED screen (resolution of 800 x 480 pixels)
-1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 processor
-512 MB of RAM
-1 GB of system storage
-64 GB internal memory
-720p HD video recording
-802.11 b/g/n, HSPA+
-A-GPS

I've used iOS and Android, though the last time was just after christmas. Both were more powerful and the browsing slightly better but conversely neither browser was as good as the N900. The 5800 can't compete with either the 3GS or the Galaxy S but I prefer the N900 to both and it would be a better phone if the software had been supported. My point is, that Sybian runs a prefectly acceptable OS and has upgraded well, even on something that is 2 years old

Been reading about that, but there are some inconsistencies. The Snapdragon was only touted as running in Symbian devices amongst them. Still, like the look of it. But then again, it'll be slotted release for November/December, push back to late December, then Mid-Jan before, then late Feb coming out in early April, 5 months late. Which will annoy me.

i'm thinking the N9 might be my next phone i just hope they make it curved like the original N9 leak (rounded and curvy) and not angular like the current leak-pics!

Just dont see that spec happening.

For starters Nokia have always used ARM CPU's in the hi-end handsets, don't see why they would move over to Qualcomm when the N8 houses an ARM 680mhz chip.

Imo the N9 will simply be an N8 with a Qwerty keyboard as thats typically what Nokia have done in the past.

e.g 5800, N97, 5280, X6, C6, 5530 etc all have exactly the same ARM 434mhz CPU, 640x360 screen & 128mb RAM & slight variations on Symbian S60 5th.

The snapdragon is ARM based :)

No it isn't.

Qualcomm & ARM are 2 totally separate companies as far as I am aware.

Qualcomm have the 1ghz Snapdragon chip (Nexus 1, Desire & X10). Info here
ARM have the 1ghz Cortex A8 (Galaxy S & Iphone 4) Info here

They work on completely different architecture with the A8 offering a marginal increase in performance.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong though

Nokia announced earlier this year a partnership which involved releasing a high end device using a Snapdragon processor at the end of the year and if the rumours of the release date are correct, this isn’t a a false CPU spec.

Qualcomm CEO also announced early this year, that we will see at least 1 Nokia phone with 1GHz snapdragon processor. This might be it

I doubt I'd get it though, dont really like phones with screens bigger than 3.5" so still looking at the N8

ARM design CPU architectures but don't actually manufacture the chips. That's left to companies like Qualcomm, TI and ST.

Traditionally, Nokia's high-end phones have featured ARM processors manufactured by TI. However, Symbian and MeeGo are both compatible with any modem ARM chip.

The reason that Nokia haven't chosen Qualcomm in the past is because the two companies got into a big legal wrangle over license fees. That seems to have been resolved now.
