Poll: Syrian Chemical Weapon Attack

Would you support a military strike on Syria without a UN Security Council resolution?

I'm sure we'll a unilateral assault by the US in the coming week, if not at the weekend. I'm glad the MP's had this frank discussion but I personally feels it's the wrong outcome. Remember this was not a decision as to whether to attack or not but to entertain the possibility. Cameron flopped big-time in my opinion by trying to push through military action too quickly and without presenting firm or the raw evidence and by softening up the motion condemned it to fail! Would have been much wiser to wait for the UN's report. Yes it may not have told us firmly who carried out the attack specifically but surely they could have gotten more details about it and intelligence. I'm amazed at how little evidence the MP's apparently had to go on...was this a matter of Israel/US or our intel services just not sharing or are they briefed in more detail but we just don't know about it.

Do you think Israel will let chemical weapons fall into the hands of extremists?

They're the most likely ones to get targeted and are keeping a very hawkish eye on everything around them.

Sure they are, the ones they know about. But is theres one thing assad has shown its that he likes shoving stuff in depots then losing them to the rebels. besides if Assad stays in power thanks to hezbollah now, isnt he going to give them the means to defend themselves in the event of another israeli invasion? theres a reason theyre bending over backwards to help him.

Yeah maybe im being too pessimistic. I suspect theres a lot we dont know.

If the Israeli regime is concerned about chem weapons falling into the hands of the jihadists and mercenaries, then maybe they should be helping Assad chase them out of the region. Instead, they're directly supporting the opposition along with the Saudis and NATO. They want Assad gone at any cost, it seems.

what makes you think they're supporting the rebels? As far as I can tell, theyve bombed a couple of convoys that Assad was using to transfer SAMs to Hezbollah and taken in a handful of refugees. otherwise theyve stayed completely out of it. You have other information?

I really do hope so. I watched a few hours of the debate and from what I can see there seemed to be very little apparent knowledge. (Does BBC Parliament channel cut out sensitive material?:confused.) To me it seemed like basically the same debate we've been having on the OCUK GD?!:(

I'm against military action but still am very saddened by this BBC report. Graphic and disturbing so don't watch if you're already in a bad mood!

Just watched this. :( This just gives Assad the green light especially if as Russia, as we expect veto any sort of UN resolution. Looks like Obama is going to have to stand up!

I can't believe that we're doing nothing. Seriously, where else do people believe these CW attacks came from? This decision has quite clearly been influenced by the hangover from Iraq, which was obviously very different.

i wanted to wait for the inspectors anyway, Cameron seemed to get a bit carried away this week, glad its calmed down for now, also disappointing at the lack of evidence presented today - US did say they will release some things too though, saying that - I personally cant see how it couldn't have been Assad forces but can understand why after Iraq people would want a smoking gun

Dont think there will be a un resolution though, assad could own up to pulling the trigger himself and still Russia will veto anything

I expect we will have a few weeks of mounting reports and planning before UK / US end up with the same strikes, without a resolution in a few weeks time, certainly dont think Assad should get away with it, very nasty stuff in the videos.

good point I heard in the debate earlier was that even if it wasn't Assads side that launched the attack, they built the things and lost control of them which still makes them ultimately culpable

funny how people moan about these actions on the basis that we failed to stop or punish other people for doing similar things in the past
its like the police saying "we screwed up and a murderer got away with it so we best not chase any murderers ever again"

There shouldn't have even been a vote, it was hasty doing so and the Government look stupid as a result. Military action shouldn't even have been on the agenda given the complete lack of evidence.

We should keep our noses out. All eyes are on Syria now anyway, and if the Governments of the world want to do something constructive to help Syrian civilians if they think they're in danger, then there are plenty of other options on the table available to them.

Wow, using the suffering of innocents to beat your own peculiar drum - you should join Labour, you'd do well.

Hardly, no one even battered an eye when the Israelis bombed the Palestinians, but in Syria its all a great shock.

Its amazing how 1 act is forgotten and the exact same act in a country of interest is "shocking"

What do you mean "you mean like"? I'm simply saying "look at this video". I'm not arguing for or against anything.

Sorry, poorly worded.

Oh please tell me why the Assad regime would suddenly want to do this?

When Assad was in his meeting, "right guys lets set off a chemical weapon so that................."

Please do finish the sentence off.
