System Configurator

A couple of observations.
Firstly
Various other well established internet firms have had this system for some time, i even purchased my first PC this way. The downside is that it can be a tad confusing when trying to decide what you actually need. If OCers wants to steal customers that would normally buy a PC from Purple Shirt or well known E-tailors then it needs to appeal to a wider audiance, if somebody is looking at pre-built then by their very nature they are not comfotable with building their own.
Why not a 'tick the box' system that can help define the hardware needs by asking basic questions;
"What would the PC's primary role be?" for example video editing, then suggest quad core/4gig mem/large hdd/cheap graphics.

Secondly
The systems seem a little unbalanced, you can specify a system with 4 gb's of ram and a Q6600 but can only add an 8600gts.
Maybe a selection system where by you select the build in a logical order starting with the case and moving on to internal components listing all possibilities (from 8400GS to 8800Ultra)
Just a thought.

Yes its a very competative market. I bought my last one from XXXX which at that time was a kicking puter and at that time they were the only company out there that offered more than just a beige boxed one.

Now four years on I am needing to replace that computer, sure XXXX are still alive and kicking but have serious competition if you want a pre-built non standard system, XXXXXXXXXX and now OCUK offer the buyer a custom built computer with the options (much more limited in OCUK) to change some of the components.

If you give the customer choices then IMHO you should not limit it too much but when "configured" offer a pre-buy spec check to see if it all hangs together.

Some of the choices for the OCUK systems are too limited but I would agree it is a big step forward from just (albeit very very good) standard overclocked base units.

Its a fine balance, XXXXXXXXX have huge customisation choices but then have to support a growing demand for "is my spec ok? but what about if I change this or that etc etc"

I think it all very healthy as a potential buyer but a headache for you suppliers !!

I would like to see more options tbh than are currently offered but clearly only OCUK know if it makes sense depending on the take up of the new configurator systems.

For what I want (or think I do !!) none of the standard or configurator choices match it, I hope that more choices are considered as essential !!

What have I said that is libelous or inflamatory ? I have edited the names of the other company's I mentioned as per the Forum rules but I find it a bit disheartening. I actually would like to buy my next computer from OCUK (My work colleague has the stock OC Quad PC mark 06 12567) but was just offering where improvements to align with other competition would be advantageous.

Oh well.

Can OCUK still answer my original question please

Hello all oc virgin here . I think this is a great idea . Iam in the market for a killer pc moved house etc all av stuff done, now i want a killer pc . But i to am looking for more options. Mainly being able to change a lot more stuff would be great as i would like different case . If iam going to spend a few grand i want it all to match in looks and kill in specs. I liked the pre built system you did that included monitor mouse keyboard and screen . Thats kinda what i want now only with a better spec and good price . Well thats my rant over , nice to be here.

Well the forums is a great place to start, plenty of people on here will spend your money for you. A wee bit of advice though, dont take everybodys suggestions as being gospel, there are a lot of fan boys on here so take a little time to read what people have posted, it wont take you long to work out who knows their stuff and who is waffling rubbish.

I guess the problem with offering too many options is ensuring that everything is compatible. I did look at a competitor, but they didn't offer the 512Mb 880 GTS as they haven't tested that it is compatible with all their other options yet. I am happy to pay a premium as I know I am getting a system where every component is guaranteed to work with the others, and it has already been tested so I know it will work straight out of the box. The components are pretty much what I would have chosen had I been given a free choice anyway.

Can OCUK still answer my original question please.

The forum isn't a dedicated support/sales channel so if you have any specific queries, it is best to call the sales team on 0870 443 0880, or send them a webnote in future :).

In the mean time. I'll do my best to address that particular query:

Hi,

Is there any option for increasing the overclock from the 3.0 offered for the Quad SLi ?. On the standard Quad there are three options up to 3.4.

The main reason this is a limited overclock option (3Ghz) is to ensure a fully stable product for customers. It's all well and good your average hardcore overclocker pushing the hardware but then he expects things to go wrong or for there to be some stability/teething issues.
It's best that the customer receives a stable and reliable system, and keeping the chip at 3Ghz on that board is about right, it's still 600Mhz faster than any stock Q6600, which is pretty good I think. :)

As for the system configurator itself - it's a great step forward for OcUK. a lot of people are keen to see product options/selection expand, but I'm sure this will come in due course. The configurator is working well and I'm sure going forward, more options will be added to appeal to a wider audience.

Thanks for the welcome,

It is true that I am more interested in an OCUK PC now there are options but I can also state that other competitors offer more at the moment.

The Abit board in the std Quad is a lesser item than the 780i sli version in the QUAD sli and is more future proof wrt the new processors. Yet this better board can only clock to 3Ghz ? I have seen many companies offer 3.4-3.6 on this board with the Go stepping Q6600.

However I am no expert so will contact OCUK direct as you suggest.

LOVE the idea of OCUK doing pre built and custom PC's, but PLEASE please give us an option to change the case. I know that case might be functional but it doesn't exactly look nice.

At the moment the reason im not placing an oder on one of these systems is due to the case. Now, adding the option for a Silverstone TJ07 (black version) i would happily click the purchase button this afternoon.

I'm sure additional cases will be introduced soon, there seems to be a lot of interest in this area - though I own a Nine Hundred myself and think they're fandabi!

Whether or not the P5N-T Deluxe is a better spec board than the IP35 Pro is a matter of personal choice I think.
The IP35 is a rock solid board with an Intel chipset (which I personally prefer). Intel chipsets tend to be much better native overclockers, without the need to cherry pick the boards.

Only issue with watercooling systems is transportation from ourselves to you. Unfortunately no courier is perfect and as a customer you'd be pretty annoyed if your brand new system worth £2000 arrived soaking wet covered in water which means it'd be straight back to us.

Most of the time it would be fine but it's just a very risky option.

Yeah i thought so, thanks for clearing up.

I agree about choice of case being important, the 900 gamer case isnt for everyone even though it is a rather good case, some people prefer to tone it down. Offering say 3 choices of premium case and one more budget orientated (say p182, antec 900 and maybe akasa eclipse and one budget option such as the zen).

Have to agree with the picture of the item you are actually selecting. Surely it would'nt be that hard to get a little piccy up when you hover the cursor over the selection. Especially relevant with the memory choices as they all show Geil Ultra boxes.

A selection of motherboards would be good too on the Gamer and Overclocked versions.

How about a choice of no Floppy along with a reduction. The floppy is dead these days, with some bios's being around 2mb in size. USB stick is the way to go.

Good idea though and prices are'nt too bad.

Hi,

We see this as a a first stage solution to what we hope will be a leading edge configurator with all the usual high end choices that you would expect from OcUK.

Motherboards are however more complex as a choice due to their interelationship with so many other components.

Next stage will be to refine the costs (particularly on certain options) & broaden the range of high end options.

A cases and credit options will also be on the agenda for adding later.

Thanks for your comments.
