HI Everyone,

So forgive me if this is in the wrong place, general hardware seemed like a good start

So its been about 10 years since i built a system, ive been a solid laptop user since then.

I decided time to get a new dedicated PC and decided to build it myself, for the fun side of it and to refresh things in my memory about hardware as well as learn all the new stuff.

WOW looking through all the latest hardware everything has changed so much....LOL...so many new 3 letter acronyms to learn.

Anyways i am thinking of putting together the following system based on some research.

Can anyone see any issues or conflicts here or if i need anything else such as something obvious i am missing and things like cables and such ? does everything below come with everything i need ?

CPU

Wasnt sure about memory, is there better or is that ok ?

Also the Intel cooler ? I mean i take it this replaces what used to be a fan on the CPU ? so i dont need a fan, this cooler works well with the CPU to keep it cool instead of a fan these days ?

Do i need extras, like thermal paste, cables, connectors etc ?

I see the PSU's are modular so do i need to get anything extra with that ?

I will be running a dual 24" monitor setup from the Nvidia card.

I am not a big game player though i might play a few here and there, and i willl be running Debian Linux though i may dual boot with Windows 7 not sure, but definately a Debain Build

Well the Blu-Ray player wants to be Retail so you get some playback software.

Is there a budget so I can make some adjustments?

Either card will be fine but the 7950 is newer.

Most people don't recommend the OCZ SSDs. This one is good/reliable:

mmm well my budget is about £1500 to £1600 as the rest i am putting towards 2x Dell Ultrasharp U2312HM 23 inch IPS LED Monitors

I know the world of Monitors is a whole big thing these days also, i have spent about a week deciding on this one for many reasons though.

But yeah for the system build then about £1500 to £1600

I was also looking at the radeon 6970 as it seems similar to the Nvidia GTX 580 as i am not a big game player, i may play a few but i dont think i would notice the difference but if the 580 is a better choice i am happy to stick with it, ahh but i see you went for the radeon 7950...right have to check that out now ;p)

How come the i7 2600K over the 2700 ?

The i7 2600K is only 100Mhz slower than the i7 2700K thats it.

As for monitors, well you cant go wrong with Dell IPS panel screens.

Yeah i was just looking at that, with regards to the Radeon 7950...that is only one DVI port yes ?

The Dell IPS panel i am looking at has the following ports

1 Digital Visual Interface connectors (DVI-D) with HDCP
1 DisplayPort (DP)
1 Video Graphics Array (VGA)

And i want to run 2 so does the radeon support twin monitors ? I know Nvidia has twinview but im unfamiliar with ATI cards
 
You can run upto three screens from a single 7950, you use the displayport connectors for the other monitors.

The card has,

Video Output Function
Dual-link DVI x 1
Mini DisplayPort x 2
HDMI x 1

So with the right cable you can connect the Dells.

oh right, gotcha i think.

So each monitor has a DP connector, so i just need 2 cables as the radeon has 2 DP connectors, correct ?

or the dual link DVI can run 2 seperate monitors from one cable (the right cable) ?

oh whoops sorry about that.

though i am just researching the 7950 and ATI driver support under linux and not looking promising.

I know the nvidia 580 will be supported with propietary drivers.

MMm have to look into this one a bit more.

oh and why one with DVI and the other with DP, why not both with DP ?

Also if you cant find a miniDP-DP cable, you can get an adapter and use the DVI cable supplied with one of the Dells.

So another question.

i saw the OcUK GeForce GTX 580 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card which is twice the memory of the Nvidia (i dont think i will go for the ATI due to drivers under Linux) and it is only £40 more than the Asus i was looking at, is this a better option do you think ?

I presume it requires the software to operate or change its mode ?

I wont be running Windows so i doubt i will access to the software.

And i take it the stock cooling system that comes with the CPU is no good ?

is there another or similar quality cooler which doesnt require or need software to use optimally ?

I was looking at this Corsair Hydro H80 High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler which i think can be just set with a push button then forgot about, is this correct ?

and one last thing, what about cooling for the GPU ? do i need extra cooling/water cooling for that also ?

You don't need anything extra to cool the gfx card.


The antec kuhler does come with some software to adjust the fan speed and also the colour of the logo, fortunately you can run it without this software and it remains in silent mode, in fact if you first do a windows instal it must be running before the chillcontrol software is installed otherwise the cpu would over heat.

the H80 its still good, but is more expensive and reviews show it to be beneath the kuhler 920 in cooling terms.

mmm i was just thinking do i need a adaptor for the 2.5" drive to go in the 3.5" bay ? looking at the cooler master case it doesnt have a 2.5" bay ?
