tablets to replace PCs?

Dunno what you are smoking dude. I don't really like Apple but most people know it is the other way around.

Android = Hardware/open software

iOS = software/apps

No? Droid hardware is behind iPad hardware by a small margin (or last I looked at least) plus droids have a lot more app choice than iOS does... last I saw at least...

are you allowed to change anything in iOS? have a custom version of iOS? last I knew it wasn't possible. Droid OS is miles ahead of iOS. But droid tabs are more focused on OS over hardware where as the iPads are more of a hardware thing than OS...

Define 'anything'? You can change a lot of things. You can hack it to pieces if you wish via Jailbreaking. Why do you need to do this?

I don't understand what you mean about the iPad being more focused on hardware, and Android tablets being more focused on software... it's more like the opposite?

Why are custom versions and hacking important when I'm talking about what the general masses want, I don't care about what you want. You'll still be on a PC regardless of anything else.

Erm, not really. They have more apps that allow you to modify things more easily, like custom launchers, but the quality and availability of iOS apps is generally better.

You're being very vague and making extremely sweeping statements that are rather confusing.

Tablets will never replace a desktop machine, the graphics, and pure power both in Ghz and usage just aren't comparable.

Tablets are great for general usage but can you really see COD, Halo or Diablo being half as good on a tablet as they on the PC? Not in this lifetime.... Angry Birds is about as good as it gets

No; it's because people cant just understand there are advantages and limitations to every platform, and accept it.

the way I see it long term:

Desktops - Every day home use

Laptops - Will get phased out for hybrids for every day use and taking to office/mates

Tablets - Occasional browsing and using on a train or something for youtube/iplayer

Smartphones etc : Portable browsing

all of them have a purpose, but nothing will replace anything, apart from the gradual laptop-hybrid change.

any media? Web browsing, films, music anything.

Laptops are to clumsy and aren't comfortable to use on sofa or bed IMO.
Keyboard issue again will be sorted out when win8 is released as will the limitation of the Os currently found in IOS and android.

Do you browse on the sofa? Wouldn't you much prefer to use a tablet for that?
Then have no drawback and plug it in to a keyboard which you couldn't tell wasnt a laptop?

I disagree...

In fact I bought a tablet and it got slowly replaced by my laptop and a subsequent new one. the fact it stands up on its own is a big positive and posting on this forum also means a proper keyboard is much better to use. On the other hand I spend £1400 on a small, thin and light laptop to replace my £120 tablet (touchpad firesale). Most people won't want to spend that money...!

But that's the point of a decent keyboard dock, you can solve that very quickly and have something that stands up.

Do you realise what an absolute load of garbage that post is? Unless you were being ironic, in which case be better. :p

You don't need to constantly hold a tablet, you get a choice. No such choice on a laptop. Again your lack of thinking shines through..

Now go lie in bed and use your laptop.. How comfortable is it to write? Good luck wrists.

I've typed all of the replies in this thread, in fact most of the replies I've posted on this forum for the last few months while using my laptop on my bed...

I am currently laid down on my back, head propped up with my pillow with my laptop sat on my belly.

but your wrists man, your wrists, for the love of all things holy think of your wrists. :p

I just have a table next to my sofa and one next to my bed I can sit the laptop on and my wrists so far have not exploded, imploded, fallen off, seized up or anything else bad. but I fear this day will come as it is not a tablet I am required to hold whilst using :(

The desktop pc is still strong in the corporate market with vdi and other virtual technologies its only real competition. I am yet to find any corporations ditching desktops and going for ipads for example. Although some corporations are switching from blackberry devices to smartphones/tablets and from laptops to tablets for home and mobile use.

Exactly. A small 12" tablet running windows, and a dock. All most office workers would need.

Attach the usual monitor/keyboard/mouse to the dock and have the network connected over wifi and companies have device that people are more likely to take home, use on the train to work etc. At the moment iOS and Android are gimped from that perspective.

Now lay down on your front, with laptop out in front and try again.

What did I say to start with?
Was it not that you couldn't, but you couldn't use it in as many positions. Oh wait you've jsut confirmed what I said, you can only use it Ina limited amount of positions,

I can use a tablet in less positions as 1 hand has to be holding it at all times

I have always seen tablets as too big too be ultra portable (same with most laptops) and the only use of it i could see is a glorified remote. Say I had a htpc (another market for desktops) and i could walk around my house controlling my systems with my tablet and sit on my couch and control the projector with it etc. But using a tablet for anything significant is not plausible. It is just too uncomfortable and the screen is too small. Try and write a book for example on a tablet or browse the web for 12 hours, you will get neck strain, unless you hang it from the roof or get a bit of plastic to prop it up or use it to plug in to other devices and then we are back to a glorified and overpriced remote.

That's exactly the sort of home I'm thinking of in the future. A small NAS style box in the corner connected to the internet and your printer for use as a storage, streaming and printing device then everything else connected to that. Your tablet/phone as the remote and your smart TV/Projector streaming straight of the NAS (or using a BD player). Most people who have a HTPC actually just have a tiny device like a WDTV however with more and more TV's using "smart" interfaces it won't be long before your tablet can be used as a large remote for your TV (or at least the small device under your TV).

Really? never heard of a smart case, keyboard dock/case or asus transformer.

Try again. You keep bending what I say and make uneducated points.

but that is just turning it into a friggin laptop, so why would I want to trade my laptop in for something that is, umm....well a friggin laptop. what part don't you get? once you connect a smartcase or dock, it becomes a friggin laptop.

no it doesn't become a laptop at all. as i can still use it as a tablet when i want.

what don't you get about you personally do not equal market share or trends.
