Taking a pay cut for a new title?

If isolation is a big driver for this, you could always find a co-working space. You're in London so there should be a bunch. A few around here are converted flats above coffee shops made available for day rental with unlimited caffeine :D
 
Might not solve the 'work friends' piece though as co-working spaces will likely be filled with random people who he may not get much opportunity to interact with on more than surface level.
