Yesterday on the bus I was with my mate and saw a Zara bag under a seat. I said "I wonder whats in that bag"

My mate then said "You still havent learned to not take things that arn't yours. You learn that when you are about 5"

Cue an discussion/argument about the fact I would find stuff and keep it when he would hand it in. (Even though he found someone credit card and tried to get £70 cash back on it and was caught and got done for fraud when he was drunk!)

I said you learn from your experiences and i have lost a lot of things that have not been returned to me, phones, cameras, wallets etc. I also found a purse when i was about 10 and all my mates told me to keep the money in it (£20) and chuck the other stuff away. I did the right thing and returned it to an old woman who took it off me and didnt even say thank you.

Whenever I find something like a Camera, Phone or anything really, I will keep it as it makes up for the things I have lost, even though it may not be the 'right' thing to do in other peoples eyes. E.g. When i was travelling I lost a number of cameras and 2 phones and had my towel stolen off a washing line. I took someone elses towel in return and ended up finding a new Camera.

Would you generally keep things or hand them in that you find?

i would keep cash because who exactly would you give cash to? the police would probably laugh when youve gone and spend it

Oh thats a great excuse for theft "Someone else did it to me first!".

Quite pathetic really, especialy when you are talking about finding expensive things.

Taking something dishonestly without intention of giving it back is theft. By taking something you know does not belong to you, you are stealing. Making some sort of justification that 'somebody will steal it' doesn't change this.

Do you advocate in favour of stealing? If not, don't take things which don't belong to you. The only circumstance in which I would keep a lost item is if it was loose cash of low value.

well that just says your as bad as the thief that took your towel, disgracefull full stop.

maybe the saying, what goes around, comes around, suits you well

If i found a phone or the such i would usually call a number listed as home to inform them that i have found thier lost phone etc.

However if i found some money (small sum) i would not go out of my way to hand it in to the police station.

if it were something that could be returned then yes, I 'd give it back/take it to the police, loose cash wouldbe mine, unless it were in a purse etc, then it'd stay there

I have morals

This.

If you find some cash on the floor then there is pretty much no way of getting ti back to whoever dropped it so yes, it's your lucky day.

Anything else, wallets/phones etc either go to the police or if they have any sort of id in them, back to the owner.

Cash - keep if small amount
Belongings (bags etc) - Hand in
Mobile - keep them turned on, they will ring it, then arrange a meet to return

Your theory is horrible, try reversing it, if you hand stuff in / return stuff to other people they will return things to you (well decent people will anyway).

Nice, so you perpetuate the **** cycle by feeding it. You've got the hump because your things don't get returned, so you think the only reasonable solution is to steal everything you see that's not immediately accounted for.

It's people like you, the 'followers' and the 'sheep' that feed social dilapidation. Be your own person and stop doing the same you perceive everyone else to be doing, you may find life more fulfilling.

Thats just ridiculous and really sad thing to do as a human being. Also your mate sounds like a total **** and reminds me of someone I knew when I was younger; a scrounging, scummy thief.

Whenever I find anything I hand it in to whatever place I'm in at the time, yes even if you "believe" (justify yourself) that the police or establishment would laugh at me for doing so. Obviously if I'm walking the street and there is a £10 note in the dirt its mine. However if I found a wallet, camera, phone or something of value to anyone I'll hand it in. I dont care if I've lost things in the past and they haven't been handed in, its just the good thing to do, otherwise you relegate yourself to a disgusting existence.

I lost my wallet earlier this year with £280 (was paying for a holiday), drivers license, bank cards etc and informed the police but never got it back.

If I ever find someone else's possessions in the future I will be handing them into the police or handing them over to the owner myself because I know how much of a pain in the arse it is :(
