Taking stuff that isnt yours

So you just thourght "oh look, I've found someone elses property, I could check where the police station is and get it back to them.....NAH! I'll give it to my aunt, thats easier", the worst thing is you actualy seem proud of yourself.

You disgust me.

No, I didn't think too much other than I have a 5 hour drive ahead of me and I'm already running late. I'm not proud, sometimes these things happen at bad times, I wasn't about to go around looking for a police station, had I known the area I might have done something different. I didn't gain from it at all and felt bad for the teenage girl who'd lost it.

I am very sorry and would like to know how to make it up to you as I don't think I'll sleep tonight knowing I disgust you.

jakeke I find it quite odd that you would take the moral high ground in the 'whippy compo time' thread http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18085815 yet severely lack it in this case

I felt bad! I didn't enjoy taking it, I never used it and I would never steal something intentionally. It was just the wrong time and the wrong place to start driving round an unfamiliar place with a car loaded with things and a girlfriend who isn't particularly patient. I have found money before and handed it in, it's not as though I make a habit of 'stealing' things and I would have preferred if it didn't happen, I didn't gain from it and it wasn't malicious. If you knew me as a person you'd know that, but it's easier to make assumptions

It's quite amusing some of the excuses people will come up with to try and convince themselves that they aren't just a common petty thief.

'people nicked my stuff'
'an old lady didn't compensate me'
'i had a long drive to do'

Hilarious.

Just to buck the trend a young guy found my mrs' purse a few months back.

She was in a real state as it had all her cards and ID inside. Anyway, he called the following morning and we both went down to collect it.

There was no money inside, but at least he made the effort to return it.

I would like to re-iterate that I felt bad about the whole thing and didn't want it to happen, I never look for hand-outs in life and I have gone out of my way to return lost money before, so in a normal situation I would have tried to find the owner. I'm not excusing myself, it's more an explanation, I did what I did

I've found numerous phones, MP3 players, wallets, so on and so forth, and everytime, I have done my upmost to return them to the owner.

Yeah, I get annoyed/ slightly peeved when I don't get anything back for returning someone's belongings, but then I realise that getting the item back to the right owner, and showing them that there are still honest people out there, is more important to me than cash I would spend on something lame.

Justification of "I stole that from someone because someone stole it from me" is utter crap. If that exact person stole it from you then ok, "retrieve" the same item back - it's rightfully yours.
However, stealing from someone else just makes them feel as bad as you did when someone stole from you.

Then again, that time I found an eigth of skunk in a cafe tent at Glastonbury... no chance of finding the owner for that (no-one would report that they had lost drugs)... I thought of it as Glastonburic karma :D

Found an ipod on the floor once on a busy high street, had no way of knowing who's it was so felt no guilt in keeping it and then giving it away as a present

It seems you have developed a sudden surge of guilt between your first post and last, I wonder why that is?

You can make all the excuses you want. You're a thief.

How is it theft it its in the middle of the street? Im not theiving it from anyone or a house. I have posted a couple of wallets back to their owners before that just had their cards in.

Just saying things like an ipod in the street or when there was some speakers near some binns. We ended up using them for 2 years and they were ok
