Having a new washing machine delivered tomorrow. I noticed that Currys will take the old one away for £15, however according to the WEEE directive, they should be taking it away free on a like for like basis?

Can you quote where the directive states that retailers must collect waste items on delivery of new ones? I thought they only had to offer a take back service in store or at a dedicated facility.

As far as I know and can see, there's nothing that specifically states or implies that a retailer has an obligation to provide you with the service of transporting your waste from your house to their site. It therefore stands to reason that they charge for such a service.

Currys offers to take back any old appliances for free if you bring them into store. That's probably all they need to do to comply with UK's WEEE regulations.

Interestingly, they WILL take back appliances on a like-for-like basis for free in Ireland, just not the UK. Maybe it's because Ireland is actually part of the EU, whereas the UK isn't.

When you purchase a new large appliance from Currys or PC World our Knowhow team will deliver the new product into your home and take away your old appliance for recycling for free of charge if you would like us to.

£15 is pretty good for getting rid of a large item you can't get rid of yourself. Our local council offers a service but they charge £25.

If you leave it on the street, ****** will take it away within a couple of hours.

We have scrap men come round and take them for nothing. They even leave card now so you can call them. Nothing like that in your area?

Wut?

The old one has been on life support since I met my now wife (it's 16 years old). It's got more bodges and fashioned metal than you can shake a stick at. I *think* it might be the controller or it might be the door lock mechanism.

My wife wants me to turn it into a fire pit....

After checking, the government website says they have to take it for free in store on a like for like, but CAN charge if it's delivered. In Ireland it's different.

I'm more upset that they dragged it through the house and didn't use a trolley because they didn't have one. Yeah, right.
