A friend of mine is flying to Kenya in the first week of December and wants to take part of his project with him:

Do you think it would be alright taking this in the main baggage, or will security think it is some kind of explosive device?

lol would probably look a bit suspect, but probably be ok if he mentions there are computer components or something to that effect in his luggage.

no problem at all.

People take laptops all the time in hand luggage which contain much more than that.

I'm bringing an Xbox 360 back from the UK next month to belgium as carry on.

Yeah i think they might not let him, would be safe to pack it in a suit case, its free and would stop any problems.

They should let him through if he proves what it is with a manual and box etc..

i got through london, manchester, singapore, sydney and auckland airports with my laptop and DSLR camera with no problems
and as said they contain a lot more electronic stuff than that

i see what you mean yeah, only way to ensure keeping it is to explain what it is and that the security understands
and from my experience they wont understand one bit :p

I have seen people with laptops going through security, but they have been asked to fire it up to show that it's a working piece of kit. May be better to pack it in your luggage.

Surely its going to be more of an issue and they will rip open you case?

It'll probably be checked out, particularly the board.

I travelled to Germany with some WAN router cables in my carry-on luggage once, and I was questioned for about an hour. Probably best if you take as much documentation as you can, or put it in main luggage.

Can i ask why half of the project, what good is that going to do?

As far as I know there are two boards... the other board is a bigger and more suspicious looking, so he is going to leave that behind. He can still work on the smaller one (they are independent)... and he is only going for 3 weeks, so he will do the other work when he gets back :)

I had a business card case with a section of motherboard minus the components which I got from the science museum. It looked pretty cool with the tracks running all over it. Bit of a hassle taking it through customs as they wanted to know what it was for? Bit annoying really, I have it because it looked nice and I kept my business cards in it.

I go travelling with a suitcase full of robots, including a mean looking flying thing.

No real problem so far. They might get checked out, and tested for xplosives.

Yep this has happened to me many times including this year. Also was made to turn on my old Archos Jukebox Recorder 20 about on about 5 separate occasions after they saw it on the x-ray. Strangely that only ever happened in Germany though (the Archos).

I flew from the states to Amsterdam with a pair of scissors in my hand luggage, it only got picked up when going from Amsterdam to Brussels!!!

So much for usa security .....
