Tearing down statues

Unless I am completely wrong I am not aware of any issue with these statues before? If there were so 'offensive' and repugnant then surely they would have been attacked and pulled down before?

Why havent they?

Because its a movie moment, the flavour of the month, a knee jerk snap over reaction to something when if anyone thought logically about what the ultimate goal is here (to remove or mitigate white supremacists) then it is going to do anything but this.

White supremacists are not going to down tools because a statue has gone.......the opposite will occur.
There have, quite literally, always been issues with the statues (talking of the ones in USA) since the day they were erected. It's just that those protesting never had a voice before - which is basically the whole point.

They have always had a voice, and rightly so it has been used time and time again, the most obvious and recent ones being at Trump rallies.

If this caused such an issue before I am sure that someone, somewhere would have illegally pulled them down.

My point is this, their anger and resentment is being pushed in the wrong direction.....its wasted energy and in fact divides the US more.

There is a lot of resentment in the US about the statues being pulled down, are they all white supremacists, neo nazis on the far right?

All of the posters on this thread who have taken issue with it. Are we also fascists?

With Britain's checkered history we would have to tear down 90% of anything over 100 years old. I can't see it gaining any support other than the occasional hipster who wants to get on TV. I wouldn't lose any sleep worrying about it.

You mean they've had a voice for, what, a year? ok then.

It takes quite a bit of effort, and would result in quite a severe reprimand under US law, to pull down a statue. It's not logical to put that upon yourself.

The US is tearing itself apart, what's a few statues.

Reading US focused forums is crazy at the minute, I never knew the country was so divided.

This statue thing is stupid, on both sides. They are just statues and likely had little attention paid to them before this sort of stuff. Now you have one side thinking they are liberating the US from an archaic past and the other thinking they are defending the foundations of the country. Reality check - they are statues, not worth spilling blood or getting rowdy over it. The statues may give the odd person a bit of perspective and a reminder but likely meant little to most.

Two groups that feel disenfranchised butting heads is how i see it. One group think the world is becoming ever more hateful and exclusive, while the others believe we are heading down a path of self destruction by being inclusive and overly PC.

By acting this stupid, both sides damage their cause

The only US statue that I have ever got emotional about the removal was the Rocky statue from the top of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

To be fair though they did just move it away and more out of sight.....

Jesus H. Christ, promise me that this is a joke.
Love 'em or loathe 'em, at least Bobby Lee and Jeff Davis were real.

If we take, for a moment, the US statues that sparked this. They were literally erected as a celebratory symbol of racism and hatred - the point of them was to intimidate and suppress the black population whilst elevating the whites. A

They were literally erected to celebrate Confederate soldiers who fought and died in a civil war. I very much doubt any were erected to celebrate racism and hatred.

8 years with a black president and I don't remember this being called for. Leave history alone...

President being the key word. Trump may be president by title but he certainly is not presidential given his actions. I can't think of anything positive his government has achieved yet. He seems to spend most of his time doing three things.

  • Playing golf
  • Crying on Twitter
  • Lambasting the media and " Fake News! "

It's just a concerted effort to make Trump's presidency untenable. By staging protests, many that turn violent, and tearing down statues they want to create a climate of civil unrest and push Trump into conceding the presidency.

Like a previous poster said before. They've had 8 years of Obama and these statues weren't being pulled down. There was nobody trying to connect the Confederate flag with the swastika.

Why bother quoting me? You seemed to miss my point and the go off on a generalised tangent.

What next?

Will they ban the Dukes of Hazzard because of the Confederate flag on top of the General Lee??

Now if they ever did that there would be civil unrest. I still get sweaty thinking about my Dukes of Hazzard Scalextric set when I was a kid.
