Teenage Weight Loss

Find out what your Basal Metabolic Rate is and then focus on eating less calories per day. There's approximately 3500 calories in 1lb of fat, so if you can burn a pound of fat a day, you'll reach your goal in no time.

Cycling is a good activity to lose weight, just keep increasing your miles every week/month.

Not sure if someone has already said here, but eating actually increases your metabolism as well. If you eat less more often, that can also have a positive affect.

As someone who went from 290lb to 170lb (now 180lb) my biggest sticking points were over complicating exercise regimes and diets to the point where I never actually implemented them and never actually did anything. I always looked for the ultimate perfect diet plan and exercise routine. That mentality is fine, if you're an elite athlete, but a fat slob like I was? Simply eating 4 clean meals a day and doing anything at the Gym was going to shift fat rapidly. Any ultra calibrated regime of exercise/diet/supplements was going to make .5% of a difference at that stage.

Honestly I wouldnt even bother with counting calories looking back in hindsight. If you eat cleanly (assuming that as a rule of thumb we understand what 'clean' means) I reckon most people would struggle to eat enough calories to put weight on, given the volume of food required. It really is tough, as I'm finding out now trying to PUT weight on.

As for weight lifting, I should have just dabbled with the basic lifts, yeah even thrown in some curls and the other 'unproductive' isolated exercises, even Smith machines, leg presses, who cares? Anything to get your arse in the Gym and keep it there. Sets and reps? Should have just lifted whatever I could to the point where I was knackered and at no point putting my safety at risk.

That would have been a great starting point and would have cut months off my journey easily.

Its once you're making progress that you can really start to optimise your work outs and diets.

Hope this is a somewhat useful post because I do sympathise with fatties who want to reform, having been there myself. :D

Thanks for the inspiring post Rosbif. I just want to get into the routine now.. I did a 1 and a half hours session in the gym.. not a continual 1 and a half hours, but on and off, don't want to stress myself to much. I will think about muscle mass down the line, but at the moment.. I want the weight off.. so I can actually buy clothes a like, not because they fit me, LoL.

Yeh, I cycled pretty much all the time, to and from college.. but I stopped due to Ice and getting dark early (Hate riding in dark, even with lights... bad things happened last time I did). Started again, so that's cool. Swimming.. I haven't been for atleast 6 years, properly anyway.. (On holiday.. soaking up the sun). I will start going soon, as there's a local swimming baths like a 4 minute walk away (2 mins away from Gym).. so atleast I don't have to travel far..

regarding the calories posted from the book, i always imagined cycling and swimming to be the best calorie burners

Im pretty sure it doesn't matter as long as you maintain a high heart rate, my personal reccomendations would be the treadmill (actually I didnt like this when I first joined the gym but oh well) and rowing machine ;).

a lot of contradictory suff in here now!

The rate of adaptation for beginners is slow, and the rate of change is high. It's more than likely someone whos new to the gym can gain muscle mass and loose weight for eight weeks and more.

Don't overload yourself, don't confuse yourself. Do what was originally suggested, get down the gym, and follow a basic cardio and MSE routine set out by the instructors there. Make small, manageable changes to your diet, don't try to change yourself over night.

Focus on free weights and advanced training comes later. For the moment, keep your sights on makin those positive, permanent changes to you, not just your body. Healthy weightloss is 1-2lbs per week, though for beginners and the very overweight it can initially be far faster than this, it will slow however. Running is a fantastic calorie burner, because its bloody tough :D Find things that tax you, don't sit in your comfort zone.

Take the photos now! This is the best time, in as little as a month you can look back and be very pleased with your progress. If you want some in depth nutritional advice, and training info, I'll give you my email via trust.

Good luck,
Ant

Glad I've inspired you Chris, (kinda).. the biggest step (as previously mentioned) is actually doing something about it, and then it's plain sailing.

I've got it in my head now, got a routine planned out.. I will upload a pic of myself soon I think, as reference..

Started back yesterday, really enjoyed it but it was damn hard work. Lost soo much fitness, really struggled to keep a constant pace on the tredmill.

Current weight is 12st, if I lost about 6-7lbs I'd be really skinny but I'd rather replace it with muscle mass over time.

Going again tommorrow, 1h gym, and 30 or 40 lengths of the pool depending on how I feel. Can't wait.

Cool. Just got back from a nice 40 minute bike ride from college.. wasn't as bad as I thought, and I was faster than Monday.. think used to low gears on way back.. just got to get past the burn.

Gym in a bit, should be good. Hopefully it ain't packed.

Congratz on wanting to lose the weight m8, I understand how you feel. At 16 I weighed 17 stone. Depressed about it. Lost all the fat by 17 ish. Was too skinny though at like 10 stone (just under 6ft 2) now built it up to around 16.5 stone (aged 19) through weight training. It can be done, you will have your ups and downs and cravings but just keep at it, have patience and willpower and you will achieve your goals.

Remember diet is everything, you have a poor diet then you will attain poor results. Get the diet in check.

Yeh, my diet is going to improve vastly. Cutting down on the crap, especilly crisps and biscuits etc.. Plus, I'm not drinking any fizzy or fruit flavoured drinks.. All I've had since Monday is Water and a cup of tea w/ spoon of honey and a couple of glasses of skimmed milk.

Just wanted to say; everything is going fine so far.. diet is fullfilling, eating no crap.. cutting down on sugars etc. Excerise is going well, just generally more active than I was before :). I know it might sound stupid at this stage, but I feel a difference in myself already.. I'd like to thank everyone who has contributed to this thread..

I will update as my progress continues, in the mean time.. people can post their stories in here.. would be cool to get other peoples insights (I know there has been a few so far, but a few more would be good).

Jake
