I know everyone else has covered this but I'm interested in quite what it was about the 114bhp Impreza Sport that 'seemed like a good choice' given you want 'a car with some power'?

I thought they had 123bhp and a 0-60 of 9 seconds odd which isn't terrible.

It's in the price range, and is along the lines of what I'd like.

When I say some power, I mean one that isn't a 50hp Peugeot 205 ;).

What I'm used to is small French hatchbacks with little to no power, although two of them have had minimal weight which helped them move under the power they had.

This is hard work. By 97 I mean, unsuprisingly, 1997. The model you reffered to.

In 1999 there was a facelift, when power was boosted by a whole 9bhp to give the 123bhp Parkers claims they all had.

tbh the lower spec Scoobies just aren't fast, as that includes the 220bhp Turbo 2000's, but they are pretty capable in terms of grip and handling so I guess it depends what your priorities are and where you mostly drive.

Yes, I am hard work. :p

I did not know about there being a facelift (hence the asking about the car :p).

If I were to consider one properly, as in go out looking for only the Impreza I wouldn't relegate myself to just 97 cars, I'd go for anyone that is pre 2001 due to purchase price and also tax, although it is only a £25 a year saving going pre 01.

Well for where driving, it'd take a lot of motorway use over the next year, and then after that wouldn't be driven a huge amount.

As for priorities, it's got space for passengers and stuff in the boot, and comes with safety features and driving aids, such as ABS, airbags, PS etc. none of which previous cars have had and I'm being pushed towards getting a vehicle with safety features etc. (by both gf and parents, obviously two accidents...one relatively minor bump...in three and a half years means I need to be in a bubble ).
