A priest from North Yorkshire has advised his congregation to shoplift if they find themselves in hard times.

Father Tim Jones, the parish priest of St Lawrence and St Hilda in York, said people should steal from big chains rather than small businesses. (BBC on-line)
Liberation theology arrives in the UK :D

It's only what the criminal justice system seems to teach us, anyway.

Father Jones sounds like an interesting character, however from reading the article it doesn't appear he is recommending theft as anything other than a last resort. It's irresponsible knowing that people don't often wait for the whole message but arguably society has failed if people feel they have no other options (note that isn't people who just want to steal for the sake of it).

I would ask that they do not steal from small, family businesses, but from national businesses, knowing that the costs are ultimately passed on to the rest of us in the form of higher prices.

Now you know where to steal from if times are bad. Don't do small and family businesses as you will go to hell. ;)

Indeed, he was taking a reasonable amount of sense when he was just "interviewed" on the Beeb this morning. It certainly wasn't a carte blanche "steal things, god doesn't mind".

It's just another case of the media taking the easiest route and completely misunderstanding what he was saying, for a cheap headline. I understood the message he was trying to put across, it's just a shame that the majority of society will just have a knee-jerk reaction and fail to look past the headline.

Completely agree, what really ****** me off this morning were the two idiots on sofa steadfastly refusing to actually listen to what he was saying and just trying to get a sound bite or contentious statement that would win them their prize at the press awards (unfortunately this seems to be the trend in the BBC )
