Tenerife ?

No, there been rumours of faster cards in waiting for months, remember the 2304 Stream Processors mystery?

You do know I was being sarcastic? :)

I was saying AMD have cards out, all Nvidia have are 'rumours' at this point..

Kepler may be a beast but if it's to many months after the fact it's almost irrelevant. It's obvious AMD have something else planned to combat the real high end Kepler, either HD 7980 or HD8XXX...

I think AMD or AMD's fans are playing Nvidia at their own rumour game... Nvidia keep saying Kepler is a beast and to keep waiting, this is AMD's or some AMD fans repsonse to that, 'It's not just Nvidia that have something faster coming out' along with actually already having new cards out :p

If the above is true then I can see a number of unhappy 7970 owners.

Nah only stupid ones.

We knew it was coming, as information was leaked out that Tahiti was locked down a bit and still had more mileage.

AMD would have been crazy to let it all go out now. And let's face it, it's no different to Nvidia with the 570 and 580 is it?

What do you mean? The 580 came out first IIRC?!

Commercially, would not make sense to release this now just as they're preparing the 7990. This is a December event!

This tell me AMD has something in it's closet to release "if" and "when" Nvidia Keplar or whatever is released, something formidable to the 7900 series that is. A show then immediately after release of Kepler will definitely put a fat squeeze on Nvidia sales.

Does not make sense one bit for this to be released anytime soon.

Edit: Despite this news, I am still buying 2 x 7970's , so no I'm not waiting for this because I know it's not happening for a while

Before the 480?

June 09, people pay £400+ for a 480. Three months later* they're worth bugger all and Nvidia have replaced them with a cool, quiet and faster card for the same price.

All is fair in love and war. And that's exactly what the GPU business is, war.

*Just a quick estimate. It may have been longer but it was still an insult to 470/480 buyers.

No matter what you buy in electronics, generally there will be something round the corner. You can sit on the fence or you can buy...There is absoloutely no point in thinking 'what if I wait?' because if you do, you will never buy.

I brought a huge TV for a grand and then out comes these new fangled 'widescreen' TV's. A couple of years Later I spend another grand on a 'widescreen' TV, then out comes these new fangled 'flat screen' TV's etc etc etc.

Buy now and enjoy...who wants to live forever :)

This won't be released until Kepler is. Hence the "TBD". IE they will wait and see what Kepler can do before deciding on the specs. They'll open up just enough to beat Kepler and save the rest for later.

THAT is why the 7970 comfortably beats the 580 yet doesn't destroy it. It's all deliberate. That is why the performance isn't what some people were expecting. Because they are giving out just enough to make their cards the fastest and saving the rest for more cards and more competition.

Absolutely Greg. Biggest waste of money in the world, but are a lot of fun to have.

^^ This HD 7970 3GB is actually not a bad card at it's current price around £400 imho. So if a HD 7980 does come I think 7970 owners won't feel jipped..

GTX 480 really was well overpriced at around £430 at launch and only 5% faster the much cheaper and cooler and quieter HD 5870...

If this is really coming out soonish i hate to think of the price they Will ask for it

Again that would be down to Nvidia.

The 7970 pricing was down to Nvidia, as was the 7950.

7950 = same sort of performance as a 580, thus about same price.

7970 = higher performance than a 3gb 580, thus about the same price so that it works out the better buy.

Depending on what Kepler offers you will see AMD either adjust their current prices to match it, or if it's faster like they claim AMD will simply release a faster card at the same price.

My bad, thought you meant the 570 was released before the 580! :p

TBH, nvidia will probably just put Kepler out of AMD's price bracket anyway

Probably mate yeah. Mind you, AMD need to beat it. They can't just sit back and let Nvidia take the fastest crown. That is what sells GPUs.

As stupid as it sounds people will buy cards from the company who make the fastest one. So basically 7770s will sell just because AMD have the 7970.

I've no doubt after looking at the pics of the Kepler board that they're aiming right for the 7970's head. And they will likely beat it too, 670ti or 680 or whatever.

AMD probably know this too after looking at the power stages and layout, so are preparing the 7970's successor which they then hope can take on Kepler.

AMD always seem to prefer releasing the fastest card first, enjoying the sales and then dropping prrices and going for value for money on the high end

They're always first to the punch is why. Even if they can't compete with Kepler they can certainly make life very awkward for it just by playing the pricing game.

Nvidia are arrogant. They always have been. They like to take their sweet time and just kick back and relax. The problem with that of course is when you're second to market you then have to give out a lot more than you would have if you were first (see AMD and their drip feeding tactics).

You're also on the back foot, so any small mistake will be amplified by a million when it goes to press (see bad press on 480).

I mean really. Nvidia have given away practically nothing. A few photos that are claimed leaks. At least AMD sneak out some spec sheets and benchmarks.

As a company you should at least reward your devoted fans with something they can wait for, something to look forward to. All Nvidia have done is deny everything. Hardly very exciting is it?

To be honest if Nvidia cannot beat AMD to the fastest single GPU then they really are doing something wrong as there previous generations performance edge gives them a head start.
what i mean is that AMD had to find xx% more performance just to level the playing field before they even started to pull ahead of Nvidia fastest, which they have done with the 7970 being xx amount faster than the 6970 but only x faster than the 580.

oh hell I'm sure you get what I mean.

anyway personally I reckon the above slide is a hoax, and if it isn't then it wouldn't be launched before Kepler anyway as that would be really pointless. surely you wait until after the opposition has launched so you can beat them, not launch first hoping to beat them.

I personally feel that AMD have kept an awful lot back.

First thing out of Nvidia's big gob was "Tahiti is underwhelming".

So I'm absolutely sure that Kepler will be faster, but at what cost?

By cost I mean how much of it are they going to have to let go to beat Tahiti? a lot more than they'd have liked for sure :D

With the 5870 AMD (well, ATI then) pretty much let rip. They put out everything the card had to offer. This time? they've been a lot more cunning and crafty about it. Instead of thrashing the last gen of cards they've beaten them. Not by enormous margins, but just enough to make them desirable.

Nvidia did the same thing with Fermi. Released an awful lot of it, then with the 580 basically released everything that core had to offer with nothing left in the tank for a rainy day.

*that* is what is going to happen with Kepler.
