Tenerife ?

Everything else seems to be doing well and they have just bought another company.

Yeah that move does support all the news that AMD see future growth outside of the PC consumer market and in the professional server market.

The price they have set for their video cards has nothing to do with the success/failure of AMD's other products, they've simply priced the chips at levels at which they think they can sell them successfully at and if they don't sell AMD might drop the price however if they continue to shift at a steady rate then AMD will have priced the cards correctly.

I always get the feeling that AMD's high prices for the 7 series cards are to make up for the failure of it's bulldozer cpu launch. Maybe they're in trouble...?

The price arent that expensive atall in the US, we get ripped off by our own country too much thats the problem plus the exchange rate has got worse.

But Yeh AMD have no competition and are going to make more money of their 6***'s card aswell.
They would be dumb to bring out their 7***'s and price it to completely undercut their own 6***'s when Nvidia dont even have any competative cards yet to compete with the 7***'s. As it is they have still completely undercut Nvidia at the high end.

A quick look gives a price of around $550+ for the HD 7970 in the US.

$550 = £347.35

£347.35 + 20% VAT = £416.82

The HD 7950 is around $460+.

$460 = £290.51

£290.51 + 20% VAT = £348.61

UK prices aren't that much different after you take VAT into account.

The U.S has state tax. I know Delaware are exempt from state tax, but with internet sales if the product is shipped from the state you live in you pay tax on it.

The general cost of living out there is more expensive than here. There's a good reason some people eat junk food out there and that's because it's cheap.

There's no NHS so medical benefits cost $400 a month, and there are copays each time you go to the doctor (mine was $100, ER $500 etc).

You're better off here. I've lived in numerous countries and as much as people whine about the UK (usually the ungratefuls who live here !) this is the best country I have lived in.

Weren't there rumours a few months back that the current 7970 is a 2304 shader GPU with disabled parts? did AMD ever release die shots of 7970 as they were (suspiciously) refusing any reviewer requests at launch weren't they? which would point to them wanting to hide something.

The 2304 shader card was also rumoured to run at 1200mhz which would explain the amount of headroom 7970 has. Have AMD been holding back?

Its not the best country when I go to the shop and a loaf of bread is £1.20 and petrol is £1.40 a litre, a chocolate bar is 89p! RIP OFF BRITAIN

$30 co pay for a prescription. My meds per month ran me $120. $1250 a month for a two bed flat in a rural area with no work.

Honestly, you really truly have no idea what you are talking about.

That $400 a month doesn't include dental or vision either.

FFS, I would LOVE for people in the U.K to get a taste of what healthcare REALLY costs. Last check when some one goes into casualty with a stab wound it costs around 30 grand.

What i want to know is who comes up with the amazing code names for these cards, why would they want it to sound like a cheap holiday

Getting like mobile phones with all this gingerbread ice cream lark, at least make them sound powerful even if they aren't :)

Hah ! you don't want to meet any cat breeders then !

The names they give their cats.. Very similar tbh, they usually pick a subject matter and then the litter are all named after parts of that subject matter.

The topic was derailed. It doesn't matter who did it. What do you guys want, a cookie?

As for the topic, if it's rumoured to be Q3/2012 at the earliest and we're talking about a 20% compute improvement then it's really nothing to wait for. And the 7970 is hardly an attractive prospect a) at the current price point, and b) with Kepler due to turn up sometime in the next decade (if it was soon I'd expect more concrete news; I wouldn't be surprised if the rumour mill is just to put a dent in AMD's sales).

Fact is the 480 is still comparable to cards currently on sale (570/69x0), can the same be said for the 5870? No.

I'd agree, but only because it has that bit of extra VRAM that is keeping it there. Nvidia need to make sure that they don't make that mistake by releasing their cards with just 2gb.

I am tending to agree with this. I got my 560 with 1gb of vram and at the time, this was more than enough. Now a year on and sadly BF3 proves this not to be.

2GB would seem plenty but I would hate to go a year and see that being used up and more vram being required.

2gb is OK for the mid-range cards. I think AMD have got this right but if the rumours about Kepler is true and the top card has 2gb then it's a bit short sighted and could hurt them.

1 gb is ok for BF3?!

Yes, you'll have to turn some settings down, but with lots of trial and error i'm sure you can come to some sort of compromise.

Yep I agree Clee. I have ultra settings with AA off and it's nice and smooth. I have used the aa injector thing as well which makes it look real sweet but tbh I struggle to see enemy through the trees.

My concern is 2GB is plenty now but say a year or 2 down the line and 2GB is not enough and will cause the slideshow effect.

Probably wont but......better safe than sorry and it is always nice to have the "Full" details on if you know what I mean?

Ah right, I get you.

My usual advice is if the price difference is small, that little extra VRAM won't hurt :p

2gb isn't enough now. I'm using over 2gb in Skyrim and that's only at 1080p. If you want loads of textures, AA, long draw distances and other goodies that make PC gaming the best for gaming visuals you need as much VRAM as you can afford.
