heard of this kind of thing before it can be used with an X10 home automation system but i understand you're point, its just not exciting enough!

At the dundee college of art this year I went to an exhebition where you could text a computer and it would display your message. it was actually called a "feelings board". you'd text something that would go after "i feel" and it would put up "i feel...*whatever*" it was pretty fun!

Another thing on display was a bench with an LED readout with the same purpose. There were pretty funny videos of the benge being tested in public.

Yeah ive actually done the LED thing... just sending messages to myself makes me feel wrong!

install a camera in your fridge so that you can check what food youve got :p

That sounds daft - but many a time I'm in the supermarket and I have no idea what I need.

Women think lists solve this - but they're wrong, wireless cameras and billions of dollars worth of telecommunications infrastructure is the way ahead!

So you have all electrical goods networked in your house? Sounds expensive, didn't know it was even possible

No paul, just now have a way to text a coimputer in my house which then i can do stuff with

As some people have metnioned before this can be achieved using X10 but what you really want to look at is EIB (European Installation Bus) or CBus Home Networks. When integrated with the Comfort home control system it can do pretty much all the things that have been mentioned on this thread. It controls everything, lights, security, heating, AV, electrical devices. All can be done remotely too. Don't think comfort are a competitor but just google for comfort home controls. I have spent a year at uni studying these home networks and we have a working digital smart room setup in our labs. Its quite interesting stuff and I'm hoping to work in a similar field when I graduate. Fairly impressive that you have managed to get similar functionality yourself without knowing about EIB and Comfort.

Right, so this 'thing' you have, which you've still not told us what it is, will go onto the internet, locate the correct peice of software, request download, and download it, all with one simple command?

Sorry, but no. I call BS on this.

Strictly speaking, he may just have pre-determined scripts on his machine which the text message simply activates - which is why he's asking for ideas. He'd need to have them all pre-determined and coded before he could use them.

Kinda - im writing a module based UI - so need modules for each task

I heard somewhere that some footballer's new house (could be Wayne Rooney but don't take as gospel) has the facility where he can send a text and it will run a bath ready for when he gets home. Pretty damn cool :)

There is no point in connecting a mobile device to a PC just to control programs though - emule has a web interface already which you could access from your phone when on the move and start a download, most other programs could also be setup to behave in a similar manner. Controlling external devices is where it's at but you need to be an electronics guru then so that you can do things like stop the bath taps at a certain water level and monitor the water temp, close and open the taps/plug-hole etc.

Um text the cooker and get it to turn on and cook your dinner in it, (which you handily put in the oven that morning) while you're on the way home from work.
That sort of thing???

Just text the missus and tell her to get the tea ready for when you get home :D *runs*
