So what is networked?

well imagine in your house - what is networked - computers i guess, routers, camera

My house is probably no different to yours, except i have a way to do things from wherever i am.

I thought of uses such as:
weather reports
traffic reports
cinema times
train times etc

But these are just simple:
1) receive msg
2) go to internet
3) text back to my phone

Im looking for something a bit more exciting!!!

I can get all of those on my phone without needing to speak to my house, I just get it on my mobile phone. :D

You could get a computer to control an on/off switch maybe, which can be used to switch on kettles/baths/monkey butlers

Hook it up to an MCE box (Media PC) and tell it to record things :) eg. txt: 'Record Neighbours' and it records Neighbours ;)

Thanks Matt for a suggestion

Thats one of the ideas i had and might still do - I might also use it for downloads - eg Download Some_legaL_software and pass this to my favourite download software.

I can get it to power up and down pcs - and if i connect it to an X10 system, turn plug sockets on and off (hence the kettle - could also do lights etc) - but i cant do the oven as its straight to the wall.

dude,if your serious and it actually works, you have a multimillion pound device and idea there

well with the lack of ideas i have here... theres not that many uses :)

had this idea when I was about 16 a while ago but had/have no idea how to implement it let alone obtain a specific device without paying loads of money to receive SMS. If such a device exists that's awesome :)

Controlling a kettle remotely using X10 would be quite dangerous as it could turn on and boil with no water in = fire hazard.

Get it to turn lights on or off. Close, open your curtains. Boil the kettle, turn microwave on before you come home. Turn bath water on before you come home or just about home. Lock doors/windows or open them. There's lots of ideas. Turn ceiling fan off/on. Power up your pc...list goes on buddy!

Would make sense then to make sure there is water in it before you leave the house, no? :)

Oh Oh. Rig up all your lights and stereo's to your computer network so they can be controlled by your computer. Then you can use your text device to control the lights remotely and scare people in your house.

Watch their reactions from a distance.

Or even install mini camera around the house and link it to a video conversation so you can watch people freaking out.

Ohh the fun I could have with that!!1 :D

i remember seeing some american footballers house, he could change all the lights to whatever color he wanted, dim them, start playing some music, turn on the hottub and "purfume" the house with those air freshener things by text, for when he had a nice lass and was on his way home.

Its actually an idea i developed from an old "tomorrows world" programme

They said:

"in the future, you can turn your oven on before you leave the office, and have it ready for when you get home"
