Put chips in your kids and you can text home and it'll reply by telling you where the kids are. Also it should have electronic locks so you can lock them in their room or something like that.

That wouldn't count as child abuse, would it? :p

Someone else has done something similar where they text their house and it lets them in the front door....

I guess you have a spare mobile PAYG phone setup via a datacable or bluetooth to your computer. Then use your PC to receive the message, act on it, and use the phone again to send a response. I had this idea a few years back but never got around to doing anything on it. I've seen a few API's available in Java to make it a bit easier so I guess the same are available with .Net too. Or write directly through the serial port.

Nowadays I'd probably get rid of the text idea and just have my smartphone connect to a web server on my machine and access stuff from there. For example, a web front end to Myth TV to setup recordings, etc.

Well done for setting it up though, I bet it's good fun :)

You should use it to learn how to put across your points and explanations better.

BINGO! We have a winrar.

Seriously tough. Just spend a few minutes drafting up a long post because I am clueless.

But if I understand this correctly. Text your house to give you sex, perhaps? (okay that was a joke gone wrong :p)

In all seriousness, how about texting you house to do the vacuum or something?

you could text your house and have it send u back pictures of stuff ie cooking, pets and anything that needs to be checked

everyone else seems to have it now...

Thats one of the ideas i had and might still do - I might also use it for downloads - eg Download Some_legaL_software and pass this to my favourite download software.

Right, so this 'thing' you have, which you've still not told us what it is, will go onto the internet, locate the correct peice of software, request download, and download it, all with one simple command?

Sorry, but no. I call BS on this.

My plan was to have a movement-activated camera on the doors of the property and upon leaving it any triggering event caused it to message me a picture, I can then dial the police if needed.

Was thinking of making it a little project for the next couple of months but I haven’t got the time to fill in the gaps(glacial fissure) in my knowledge.

:(

For example, emule - i can command that - get it to search for a file or filename and start a download...

im sure i saw something like this on the gadget show ages ago

still neat idea, id go with the text "mood" settings to set up your house for when you bring back a fit lass from town

EDIT - OR you should post you phone number and we can text things for it to do, and then you can be suprised when the kettle goes off at 2am :p

Controlling the central heating and or hot water heaters - switch em to over ride and turn on if the weather is cold and the heating is set to not come on or switch the immersion heater on.
Great idea but maybe setting out what people would find most usefull to be able to do remotly and cant do right now would be a good start....

heard of this kind of thing before it can be used with an X10 home automation system but i understand you're point, its just not exciting enough!

At the dundee college of art this year I went to an exhebition where you could text a computer and it would display your message. it was actually called a "feelings board". you'd text something that would go after "i feel" and it would put up "i feel...*whatever*" it was pretty fun!

Another thing on display was a bench with an LED readout with the same purpose. There were pretty funny videos of the benge being tested in public.

I have had nothing but bad experiences with texting houses :P I accidentally sent a text to my girlfriend... misselected her mobile, and sent it to the house, so then her mother read it, unfortunately. I'm sure you can guess what the contents of the text were

Edit: On actual topic, use it to set up some leet security system :D There's a guide as how to make a remote control sentry gun, try and use that in conjunction with it :D

I can indeed, VERY nearly did this too just the other day.

Actually it can be a REALLY good way of making women smile. There were a few people round and we weren't talking much so I texted the landline with something nice. Rewards a-plenty I tell ya :p
