Text my House

If youre bringing home a date then set the house up for that particular kind of mood - Im sure you could text it a setting and it then does a series of events like:

switch on some nice music
put the kettle on
dim lighting where you need it
switch on the power to some air freshener thing in case ;)
control the thermostat for the right temperature
so forth (in essence just a glorified timer)...

Just setup some 'moods' for particular events...

Why dont you tell your house to take pics of people who approach your door (say detected via infra-red) to take a pic and MMS it to you as a security device...

If you were really clever you could perhaps initiate/take calls from ppl at your door via some kinda comms system (PTT would have been useful here :p) - maybe thats a bit over the top ;)...

Just limited by your imagination and ingenuity really...

it's more useful to have the house text you.

Eg. someone rings the doorbell.

- House traingulates your position using your gsm signal
- If you are away from the house, webcam takes a photo
- MMS sent to your phone of the individual
- if you want, dial your house, which will allow you to talk to the person outside.

EDIT: Damn, beaten to it

You texting the house is only really useful for tivo etc. where you want to set a something time sensitive. Email can be done very easily from your phone.

The only problem is how you’re planning to interface the device that receives/processes the message and the part that will be responsible for actual control function.
 
text the hoover, the duster, bog cleaning stuff, lawn mower etc and come home to a clean house.

Or just get married

Quite like the camera one - my house is out of the way - so theres no reason for anyone to walk past....

Have you seen you can do that with Sky+ now, very cool, you just text what program, channel and time to the box and it records it for you, don't have Sky+ myself but it sounds awesome.

Love to see what you could do with that and X10. Wished I owned my own house to try the same. Did you ever explain how you set the SMS component up?...

Yup, but unfortunately X10 is quite unreliable, and noise in the power supply can be mis-interpreted by the control units as a signal to turn on.

X10 themselves advise only using it to control items which would not be a hazard if they were to erroneously turn themselves on.

great already said and was exactly what i was thinking.

I was gonna say get married like the earlier post but would be even more expensive to implement.
 
Put chips in your kids and you can text home and it'll reply by telling you where the kids are. Also it should have electronic locks so you can lock them in their room or something like that.

That wouldn't count as child abuse, would it? :p
