I haven't played as one yet but engineers indeed do seem to have a lot more offensive capabilities and the shotgun is quite sick when it crits. Can't wait to start playing again when the rush is over, in the meantime everyone go demoman and pyro!
Not forgetting the gun will be getting though it's ammo quicker, so you'd need two engies on a gun to make it effective.
Hmm if you want a good view, you are likely to be sniper fodder so this isn't so bad I guess. Can you move yourself while controlling the gun? Time will tell though if it's possible to learn to blind fire from round a corner though. I guess you could have a spotter for the engineer, but that would be very difficult to do without constant voice comms.
I don't think I've ever seen sentries run out of ammo! Is that just a feature in the new update with the new gun or has it always been there but I've never noticed it?...

You can move around.
Sentries have always ran out of ammo, but they're never firing enough to do so. Now though they run out really quickly when you're firing them.

You can blind fire your sentry if you have it set up to control a narrow length, just sit behind it and point through your sg body, use it as sword and shield ^_^
But in more likely scenarios you will have to stand up for a good line of sight and stand still to paint moving targets for your sg. Spies and Snipers like players who do that.
Ammo is not a real problem unless you're holding off the horde alone in which case you're screwed anyway, but you have two choices, #1 is to spam damage til they get your sg/you and #2 is to grab your sg and run for it to somewhere more defensible.
Another interesting thing I've found while playing epic engy wars is that if you're carrying a mini sentry and you meet an enemy engy going the other way carrying a fully ranked normal sentry, if you both plant them and fight it out with shotguns the mini sentrygunner will win.
Its the speed the mini SG can get up and start firing that turns the tables on the much more powerful normal SG + engy team.
The mini gun is very amusing for offense, if you run up to an enemy who hasn't noticed you, plant your minigun, THEN start shotgunning they get freaked out by the sudden pincer attack (especially as the SG has a bit of knockback on the bullets) and the confusion at what to target can get you an easy kill

You can carry every building.
If you look at your buildings close up as an engy you will see a little tab saying right click to pack or something.
Right click and pretty much instantly you're holding a large red/blue toolbox. This is your building.
It keeps its level and whatever health it was at. When you plant it again (left click somewhere free) it will rebuild itself very quickly to whatever it was originally.
You cannot attack or swap to any weapons/build menus while you're carrying a building. You need to plant it before defending yourself etc. You can still pick up metal/medpacks/refill while walking about with your packed building.
You can only carry one at a time too.

You can pick up and put down without unlocking anything, that's just a general engi ability now. The Frontier Justice shotgun is unlocked at 5 achievements, which is a piece of cake. 11 achievements unlocks the Wrangler which lets you remote control the sentries, and 17 gives you the Gunslinger which gives you the mini sentries.
Also, engies are the only class to have two different taunt kills

You get drops for just having the game open now. Sitting in the menus, creating your own offline server etc. Have you been playing in a instant respawn server lately? Last week I spent about 50 hours in joe.to, a rocket jumping server which has instant respawn so you can't get drops there. When I went back to my normal server I got 6 at once because I died and actually respawned.
Added that server to my favourites, I'll pop in if there's a map I like on.

Someone told me it did. Either way, sitting in your own created offline game isn't much different from menus.

Sitting on a server in spec mode gets you achievements, not in the menus.
Those launch options will open the game up in text mode then you can use server browser to connect to a server.
