that "worst place to live" program

well one of the mian reasons we even get picked for that is because the poorest street in the country is in our centre....... theres 1 council house in that postcode i think , rest are buisnesses :/

I have to agree with you mate, nottingham is a train wreak, its full of chavs, sl*** and MP's who think "modernising" a town is putting signs up saying "village hall this way"

Well, actually, what I was trying to say is that the way that the programmers use the information is a little skewed. The impression I get from walking round Nottingham (centre) and knowing Nottingham in generally, it's a very nice place to live and be. It's one of my favourite city centres in the country and it's only getting better.

The places classed as city (which have been counted in the programme) like St Anns and The Meadows are mostly horrible statistically. But places I see as Nottingham (and we're not talking just Local Authorities) haven't been included because of the LA they're part of - even though West Bridgford and other Rushcliffe places are essentially Nottingham.

I saw this myself andy, and i cannot think why 'boro' is the worst place to live, we have the best drop in crime in the country apparently, there's a LOT of redevelopment going on all over, however places like Grangetown and Southbank bring it down, then i suppose being so close to the works is a factor, but believe me, i've lived in a much worse hole than 'Boro', that was Moston in manchester, i had no choice :(. Also, i'd say Wythenshaw in Manchester isa a much worse place to live than 'Boro', it's not nicknamed 'the largest council estate in Europe' for nothing.

What channel is this on? I can't see it in the TV guide.

EDIT - Ahhh, tomorrow. Google is my friend.

Quiet, northerner! :p

On a serious note, i'd agree with you, a lot of the people around West Sussex are very stuck up, we seem to have a large amount of whinging elderly. Recently the area has developed worrying support of UKIP and Horsham has it's first BNP candidate, probably due to the fact that a family of immigrants (Down here immigrants can probably include anyone north of Sussex :p) moved into the area. Immigrants is shocking news for a county that has statistically 97% white people : /

not all of west sussex is stuck up, there are a lot of very **** areas in west sussex.

im obviously biased but i seriously cant see how that is true

ill always love the place

Just out of interest what part/area of middlesbrough do you live ?

Where i live is a total **** hole and i feel the same about quite a large part of middlesbrough. Southbank, Grangetown, Whinnybanks, Thorntree, Gresham/town Grovehill saltersgill, hemlington,... I could go on, most of which you would not feel safe going to the shop on a night without a stab vest on.

I hate the place, its is the worst place to live IMO.

I wonder what they take into account when saying this?

When i went to Ayr(west coast of Scotland) they thought Hamilton(west central Scotland) was very dodgy....i cant say i've had too much trouble in my life really, stay away from the people who are trouble and trouble doesn't come find you!

Yes there is lots of wee female body parts that just need a slap and yes its violent(a member of my family[noooooooooooooooooooothing to do with my close family] just got 3 years for attacking a guy outside a pub with a samurai sword! From what i read he had it coming though...

Or is it based on house prices and school grades?

probably a combination of those 2 plus things like: health record, average earnings, unemployments, general prospects for people wanting to move on

If its based on things like you said then its useless.

Surely to judge the best place to live you find the place with the best community?

why?
some of the worst estates in the country could have great community spirit, yet would be ranked very low because of unemployment and general ****ness.

Well isnt a nice community providing a better living experiance? I'd rather live in a village/town with a great community spirit then one with none.

yes, but there is more to it than that, also, how do you judge community spirit on a level where it can be compared against others?

Hmm good point. Perhaps person to person communication and events? Maybe an actually active neighbourhood watch? Events to stop bored teenagers? Decorations for celebrations?

I don't see how anyone who had visited Middlesbrough could say it was the worst place to live... Has a nice town centre, a respected University, diversifying workforce (moving from industrial to customer service areas) and some nice areas to live in...

Maybe I should move elsewhere, after living in the worst place to live I'm sure everywhere else will be like a candyland.

again, how do you compare that to others?
the worst areas where money is tight, might not put much on for decorations, but as a percentage of the 'wealth' it could be a lot.

things like long term sick / average wage / school ratings / etc, are all figures that are readily available and comparable.

I guess its easier to compare quantitative data than qualitative data.

I have to agree with you about the Uni, infact, we have THE best uni for computer animation, people come from the states to study here apparently (according to my tutor at college a couple of years back). The kids here have fantastic opportunities, moreso than i had in Manchester, (my gf's son is on double what i earn as a sparky trained at TTE, and i'm not on a bad wage, and he's only 22, the Centre isn't bad either, there is a chav culture, though still not as bad as anywhere else in the country from what i've seen, crime is on the decrease even though it is one of the worst areas for it - or was.

The best bit about boro - which won't be mentioned - is, we are surrounded by some of THE best countryside in the whole of the UK, on my doorstep i have the North Yorkshire moors, i'm 5 minutes away from the beach, 20 minutes away from some of the best beaches in the country and some of the most pittoresque places in the country, enough to make most of you envious anyway, so am i proud to live in boro? Well, i wouldn't say i'm proud, i live in a nice part of a 'semi' crap town, far from the worst in boro, but not the best, but move my house into somewhere like Great Ayton or Stokesley and it's value would be about £350k easy. I don't like my area but i like the surrounding areas to the north of me, the moors are a couple of minutes away from me including Guisborough forest and i still have a lot of exploring to do.

Ultimate question, havng lived in Manchester all my life, (manchester i think is no.13 on the list now) where would i prefer? well, if i could have Manchester city centre and South manchester surrounded with what we have up here, then i'd have that, otherwise, i'll choose where i am now :)
