that "worst place to live" program

I think I would rather live in an area with no 'community' or 'community spirit' and feel safe than live in an area with a community feel but with gangs/people out on the streets causing nuisance. I believe you can create a sense of community within your friendship group. Maybe this is quite self-centred.

exactly lol , stockton town centre is awful ... and billingham ,they both have there really rough and really nice areas too though ... and then theres peterlee....

all these places are close but theyre surely worse than boro

lol @ Stockton, the people you see walking about there i think are really underdeveloped as humans, a lot of them have something missing, and yeah, the town centre is a bit of a dump, but the riverside is actually quite nice and where they are developing Stockton, it actually looks like a nice place to live (on the other side of the Tees to the town centre).

It's a tough call but in terms of crime and drugs, surely Middlesbrough ranks way above Peterlee ? It is true that Peterlee and the surrounding villages such as Easington Colliery and Horden are pretty rough and run down. As of a few years ago East Durham was one of the most socially deprived areas in Western Europe.

Allot of the old pit villages in durham are bad, if it was america they would be the ghost towns you see in the movies. 3-4-5 generations of unemployment and anyone born to that sort of background has to really "step up" to get out from under the benefit trap.

In the US they would have had to move or die not excatly a solution I'd go for but it kinda works.

Being someone from the North East working down south I alway get grief for "if its so great up there why dont you move back", frankly I would and will when my career can progress up there.

Well, actually, what I was trying to say is that the way that the programmers use the information is a little skewed. The impression I get from walking round Nottingham (centre) and knowing Nottingham in generally, it's a very nice place to live and be. It's one of my favourite city centres in the country and it's only getting better.

The places classed as city (which have been counted in the programme) like St Anns and The Meadows are mostly horrible statistically. But places I see as Nottingham (and we're not talking just Local Authorities) haven't been included because of the LA they're part of - even though West Bridgford and other Rushcliffe places are essentially Nottingham.

Just to quote my further post - I think Nottingham is actually a very good place to live. It's just the way that the programmers use the information on 'Nottingham' (the LA, rather than Nottingham full stop) that gives it a bad impression. I've never felt intimidated walking through the City - day or night.

The only places I don't particularly like being near (and I've never physically had to be in them, just through) are St Anns and The Meadows... which aren't that bad compared to similar areas in bigger cities.

I'm living in Nottingham and it's an OK place to live. The problem with that program is they go by Stats not by asking the people of Nottingham their opinion...

yeah, it's interesting how it is split, and having recently moved here I'd say I feel safer in Nottingham than I did in London in the evening.

Good result for Rushcliffe :)

Its quite scary (my opinion) when walking through nottingham and the gang culture walks right at you, i dont know wether to dive into a shop or take the risk and go around them, i dont fancy getting stabbed or shot just because im different or i glance a look at them.

So you saw a few chavs in the city centre and feared for your life? Oh dear. Time to get some self-confidence, I think.

Go to uni in the 17th worst place (Manchester) and was brought up in the 14th worst (Barking & Dagenham) :o Can't say I disagree with the latter.

I thought the list was a load of rubbish. Most of the places in the top 20 were little boring non-entity towns in the middle of nowhere that just happen to be a bit posh. The criteria was pretty terrible too. Surely high carbon emissions indicates a high quality of life? And why would I care if loads of people smoke? Saying that, Edinburgh does seem very nice even though I have never been there

Totally disagree with all the people saying they would hate to live in London. It is a fantastic city especially if you have the money to make the most of it and live in a semi-decent area. If you don't, then you see why 5 out of the 20 worst places in that list were there but as the couple of posters from Newham said, it is still good in many ways.
