The 100mm F2.8L IS Macro image thread

I get them for transport usually, worrying that a cap will come off in a bag etc. I rarely shoot with one on unless I forget to take it off. They are much cheaper now than they used to be as well.

It's also about bloody time canon went to center pinch caps!

They have. They announced them a month ago.

To the guys that picked it up on that deal. You jammy gits! Nice one seriously. Steal at that price. Lovely lens. I no longer have Canon gear as I shoot m4/3rds now but well done to those who got on board. This sometimes happens with Amazon. Prices can be ridiculously high or low depending. They fluctuate a lot.

Initial impressions

Sharp lens. Insane close focal distance (as it should be), snappy focus speed. Top half above the focus ring is plastic? The hood also seem to be be finished slightly different on the outside than my other lenses. It's more matt than gloss. It feels fine in the hand but my Non-L 45/TSE is built more solid than this.

Look at the scratches. :D

snap:p:D,
the image stabilization is very good ,cant wait for some good light and the rain to stop!!!

Yeah in lowish light indoor with no flash and the lens set on full I didn't find it that snappy to lock AF, but in a fully bright kitchen it did very quickly.

same here ,but fine in low light if its high contrast areas
the manual focus is very good (easy ),
seems very sharp ,as well as macro i think this will be a great portrait lens ,just need to find a willing victim
cant wait to play

That's the one slight drawback with the AF; it is slow to lock. In good light though it's a great lens to play with. It's hard to describe but it feels very different to any other lens I own, possibly due to the IS, but it really is nice to use. I've taken some nice portrait photos (that mother says I'm not allowed to post because she looks old :D) and it's very nice to have :)

Ah right I'm glad it's not just my lens then in low light, that take a while to lock. I thought mine might be faulty after using the 70-200 2.8 for so long :D

So how do people get these mega close ups of spiders and bugs etc. Or frost that I see on TP? Even at min focus distance I can't get anything like that sort of magnification. Is that what extension tubes are for?

:)

AF is definitely handy when you wanna take pics of insects that are about to fly away or something! That coupled with the uber shallow DOF which makes the manual focus a bit more difficult that usual... AF is handy!

Mine was meant to be sent off to santa as it's a Christmas present from my wife, but, well you have to test these things out first don't you :).

Probably the same reason as to why I havent posted a shot in this thread yet. Will hopefully rectify that by the end of the weekend.

edit: and by that I mean post a picture, not purchase a timepiece!
