The 2010 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

Right!

My tepin is doing well, and all 4 bird's eyes are just about to start their second set of leaves.

I got my new seeds in the post today, and will be aiming for just 1 of each type in a pot all sharing a windowsill in my new place we are moving in to next month.

I am weary of the direct light options that the new place will have, as there are no south-facing ones.

The yellow lines show the windows, so the only direct sun they can get is from the South-East in the morning.

Given I only wish to grow 4 plants, and only to a windowsill sustainable size, I'm toying with the idea of a CFL in my airing cupboard to give some extra light.

Would a 65w CFL be sufficient for 4 plants?

Is blue or red better for the 'top up' lighting I will be using them for?

Love the paint job :) Id perhaps see how they do on the windowsill, if they dont seem to be doing ok, then try the CFL method.

Cool. I can get constant light by moving them around my current place, but the new place wont have that ability.

Got my perlite/verwhateverlite and chilli focus today :D

I had a couple that were really shriveled and drooped right over but after a couple of hours with a bit of wet stuff it bounced right back. Saying that though I have also lost a couple like this so I think it all depends how old and sensitive they are. Much like women!

Keep her moist and she will most likely blossom? ;)

ive found cutting a bottle horizontaly for the lid and bottom and places it over the plant retains moisture really well!

ive had to or my cats will eat the plants lol.

silly wife let the cats on the balcony while my plants were out and they eat 2 of my cucumber seedlings!

ill get revenge as soon as my chillis get fruit see if they still feel like plant eating!

Well after finally moving into my own place over xmas and now having a spare room I can grow my chilli plants in I've taken the leap of faith and ordered a couple of different types.

Jalapeno (30 seeds)
Lemon Drop (20seeds)
Joe's Long Cayenne (20seeds)

All for £5.90 include delivery!!! BARGIN!!!!

Now my only question is, out of all the seeds I've got, how many should I be expecting to grow, as I'm not wanting to plant them all to only find I've overflowing with chilli plants in the summer months!!!

Also, can anything let me know how big the plants will get once fully grown?(Lemon/Joes). Cheer's for all the help and I'll be checking back on this thread lots!

I tend to put down about 4/6 depending on how many seeds I have and how many plants I want at the end but normally so far about half to 3/4 have sprouted but then I pick the strongest looking when it's the next repotting stage.

Cheer's, funny how we've almost bought the same chilli's! :)

Has anyone tried to grow bell peppers? Are they easy to grow?

Would love to have a go at growing these as I use them all the time and at 90p a pop I could make a nice saving by growing them. Plus I could dice them all up and bag and freeze them for storage.

I'd also like to know this as I was telling my old dear the same thing in the supermarket on the phone. Rip off costs! I'd like to know the size of the plant, as the fruits are pretty hefty.

That was my thought, I have some in my window. Nothing huge yet, 4" or so. Seem quite easy to grow so far :)

wilkinsons sell little ready to grow pots of them so im having a go its only 97p so if nowt comes of it its not a huge loss. (assuming you already have pots and compost for when they need repotting)

open pot > open seeds > place seeds> water > close lid
come back in around a week put them in a sunny window.

for 97p who cares if they die :D

im getting really nice germinating results from those wilko "open/sow/grow" pots btw in 3 pots only 2 seeds havent germinated so far and they were tomato ones where you get like 10 seeds anyway
