The 2010 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

I ate a couple of whole nagas a few years back. Was awful. I still think the Maddog Bullet Sauce was way more potent though.

Does eating hot food from a young age increase resilience to the heat? Is it possible to train your tongue?

Just out of interest, what are you planning on doing with your Nagas when they fruit?

Here is Gerald how he is at the moment (Very well, thanks again NickK :D )

If you can find ones that are already growing (ie a plug from a reputable grower) then that will help, other wise it may take a 2-4 weeks to germinate and then you're into late summer. The plants will have grown but may not have enough time to flower and fruit, or the fruit will not have ripened properly before the autumn. Worth a go though!

The good thing about fresh chillis are the taste difference.

yeh i will buy small plants, most of them were starting to bud, gonna see what i can find in the shops later :D

i didnt want anything too big like bush size so just kept it nice and simple and went for the prairie fire chilli plant :p

i actually wanted a bush one like the pictures of what your one turns into, i hope its hot enough for you.

from the experience of growing this plant (which is my first ever chilli plant from seed) its been very easy. i've got some seeds left over if you wanted some? obviously would need to be grown next year now. nice little plant perfect for the windowsill. infact mines never been outside :D

the heat should be okay.. i didnt want anything mind blowing like the naga's :p

that would be really nice thanks. and yeah my jalapeno has been easy to grow, just repotted it into a nice soil mix and fed it baby bio and it took off :D

so i went to wilkinsons today and they had cayenne and scotch bonnets, for 99p for a little one or £1.48 for a bigger one, so i now have this scotch bonnet:

gotta remove the aphids and repot it, give it a feed and then it should take off. homebase were pap, loads of fungus nats flying round their plants

:D

Currently, the over wintered superstar naga from last year has two confirmed chilli fruits growing. The other two plants seem to be making flowers and not much else - just like last year!

I'll keep the seed but I'll probably make a large batch of curry base and use the fruit flesh itself.

i've not had any problems with any gnats or flies so far, fingers crossed!

one of the flowers on my plants has started opening today! :D this could be a good sign. hmm....am i going to need to self polinate soon? lol...

Bought 3 chilli plants today for a quid each from Tesco. Stuck them straight in my little greenhouse and have called them Tom, Dick and Harry. I am quite impressed as the Scotch Bonnet is flowering and the Red and Green have buds on them.

i did pain in teh backside! only saw one fungus fly in about 5 days though so hopefully not watering from the top is slowly working at one point i was seeing 5+ flies a day

having to reharden my plants aswell  had a weeks worth of bad weather so i kept them indoors and now its a sunny day they are wilting a lot outside :(

guess they did a groth spurt but didnt bother putting energy into growing more roots

Whats the general consensus of re-potting a plant with fruit? it is going in to a bigger pot.

just put soil at bottom of new pot, sit your plant in there without disturbing roots and put soil around the edge and it should be fine.

what types were the red and green?

you typically get the fungus nats when you buy soil or plants that already have them.

Appear to have hit a wall with one of my plants.

I think it has been over watered. I squeezed the pot and about a saucer worth of water came out. it has been looking like that for 2 days now.

I think it may need put in a bigger pot with more compost also. it was fine until about 3 days ago though

Any ideas>?

im getting quite a few chilli's forming on mine now the biggest is about the size of an acorn but 3 of my plants are starting to get leaf curl on new leaves and loads of tiny spots under the leaf (plant edema i belive)

aparently caused by over fertilising and over watering. (definetly not from whitefly/thrips/aphids)

i was only bucket dunking once a week but with a rather cool week up here i guess it wasnt evaporating fast enough :(

EDIT: yours looks like over watering to me and beeing able to squeeze water out of the pot im 99% sure of it, stick your pot so its at a sloping angle of around 45 degree and a lot of the excess water will hopefully find its way out

put it in a 5L pot with compost and 2-3 handfuls of perlite mixed in(gives the roots air and improves drainage). also use all of the pot, not just half of it. if the pot u have is already a 5L, lift the plant up, half fill with new mix and sit it on top.

Im sure it is over watering. I watered it and put organic fruit feed with it which im also thinking was way to much. I will take it home and stick it in a big tub. Guy at work suggested flushing it so the roots don't have much fertilizer left on them

yeah it will be overwatering especially since you said all that water came out, you need to have airated compost(thats what perlite does) and then it can handle a soaking once a week. i cant see any nute burn on the leaves so you probably dont need to flush it. when you do water it, do it slowly and when some runs out of the pot, stop. then wait for the pot to go light before watering again.

I have this as well but its only one one or two plants. Its strange because I treat all the plants exactly the same but only 2 have the curling. Its on all the new leaves at the top of the plant.

Also dont think I have been over fertilizing as i've just been using half strength mix of Tomorite once a week. Must be over watering I guess but again I've only been watering weekly this last few weeks.
