i thought the flowers were dying when they went brown, but it seems a chilli is coming through when they go brown! i brushed a flower before and a little bug came out. a little suspect... i'll keep an eye out for them as i dont know if they will strike when the fruit is ripe.

nice bushylittle plants there. now a couple of chillis are starting.. loads more come right after. mine have grown bigger than my thumb in about a week :D

Well I figured I've been long overdue an update, put the plants into bigger pots two days ago and they seem to be surviving my manhandling :)

They don't seem to be as big as I would have hoped by now but you can see for yourself;

@ taske,

They're looking healthy, should shoot right up now that they have been re-potted.

One thing to watch out for with black pots is that they aren't getting too hot. The roots will begin to circle around the inside of the pot as they grow and the pots tend to get very hot when in direct sun light.

My black pots were almost too hot to touch one day after being in the sun for a few hours. That's why I have taped some A4 sheets of paper around the pots to help reflect the sun.

BTW, does anyone know what could be causing this?

Its happened one 2 of my plants, just on one or two of the bottom leaves. Ive not fed them with tomorite for 2 weeks because some of the plants leaves were curling at the top, so they;'re due a feed this weekend. Could it be lack of nutrients? or maybe a blight due to over watering?

That looks like a bacterial infection - possibly something biting the leaves judging my the locations being near the main veins. The leaf will now die and drop off.

My plants are starting to show signs to heat stress (just the two lazy ones). The flowers are shrivelling before the plant goes limp. They have water but obviously need a good soak when the sun is not on them.

@DavidMarq - that's the same plant that fruited last year and give all the seeds.. I'm considering only overwintering that plant and growing two if it's seedlings for replacements next year.

@taske - keep at it. They're beautifully healthy! As Mark has said, they'll shoot up with the additional root-space. If you don't get a crop this year then overwinter them and you'll get bumper crop next year!

Anyone got a pic of their Naga plant from NickK's seeds? The stem on mine is now green so I'm hoping it is actually a Naga and I didn't get the seeds mixed up with something else.

Also, with it being this size its very doubtful it'll fruit this year. Would it be possible to over winter a plant this size? Maybe if I kept it away from the window but still in daylight, so that it doesn't get too cold (single glazed :( )

lol indeed what i meant was that the plants are small and i doubt they will fruit this summer, would they survive into next year?

Cheers
Jay

ive got some not much bigger than yours with buds starting you might get lucky.

no clue if they would overwinter but i wouldnt have thought they were mature enough

@mark - those look like nagas.

The naga is slower growing than things such as jalapenos. I'm not sure of the point when overwintering is viable but I'm assuming that it requires the stem to be woody.. Mine survived very cold temps but I'd advise keeping them above ~7degC (mine got to near zero).

They will naturally wind down as the days shorten and temps drop. They'll then drop their leaves and go into hibernation.
You may need to keep them warmer so they don't drop their leaves (~15degC) if they're still soft stemmed. However the summer isn't over yet :)

Lot's of chillis coming through now on the ring of fire!

The beast I've got right now though has to be the friar's hat plant as it's probably taller than me now. I can just reach the top of it!

That is all :)

I'm still waiting for my Bhut Jolokias to germinate...

They'd need incubation and inside lights to survive the winter.

How did you try to germinate them? Some of mine last year appeared well after the others but I had a grow light going so they got to a good size and could be given away to a work colleague who has grown nagas in the past.

I put them under 2 weeks or so ago, each seed in a pot of soil, dampened, and then covered with cling film to keep the moisture in and then put into the airing cupboard. Did the job with the last ones, but they took ages to come through as well.

As for incubation and inside lights, I can't really be arsed with that, so I'll just see if they come up and go from there. It was more because they were given to me for free.

Reckon I've done it wrong?

Mine are progressing quite well - almost time to harvest a few as they're starting to turn bright scarlet. I'm still not sure what the large green ones are, and will probably have to wait a bit longer to find out. They're all drinking serious amounts of water now - each plant is taking nearly a litre per day.
