The 2010 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

I'm currently nursing my chilli plants back to full health, along with the rest of my veg. Went on holiday for two weeks and left them in the care of my flat mate. Looks like they only got watered twice a week! Thankfully they only dropped a few chilli's, another weeks time and they should be good as new again. Still dissapointed though. A few yellow leaves too.

Ouch..

I have six chillis ready for picking, although I'll leave them on the plant to ensure the seeds are in the best possible health. I have noted that they're taking longer to ripen so the August sun and temps are already starting to make the plants slow compared to the height of summer.

I don't know if I'm going to bother trying to grow anything other than a few chilli plants next year. It just seems pointless with the crappy weather we get here. I thought June and July were supposed to be the hottest months of the year? Its been freezing cold and cloudy for 2 months solid now . All my tomatoes are exactly the same size they were 2 months ago and none have even started to ripen. I wouldn't be surprised if they start dropping off.

Its just annoying as I started early in the year and did everything right but have nothing to show for it. Just down to the weather. I don't know how other people are managing tbh.

I'll try and over winter a few of the chilli plants as then they would have a head start next year and might start ripening at the beginning of summer. And might grow a few Bell pepper plants as they dont need to ripen and can be eaten green.

Cucumbers. They have given me the most crop so far, even though they have been through a few phases of stopping/starting production, partly because they dried out when we had that week of hot weather.

One of my outdoor tomatoes has started to turn, the top 50% of it is orange/red, rest of the plant is more yellow/orange. Indoors they are all bright green :o

lots and lots of chilli's. too many to know what to do with  ! i got a couple of very red evil looking chillis' though..

Had my first Mustard Hab today sliced up in a couple of cheeseburgers, not exactly cordon bleu but you do get the full flavour of the raw Hab.

The Mustard Hab was on a par heat-wise with last years Orange Habs, so I estimate 200-300k scovilles, the distinctive Habenaro flavour is slightly more subtle and would probably be almost lost with cooking.

A very nice chilli but would always come second to an Orange Hab in my book.

I went away for about half a week, a few weeks back, when it was still quite hot and sunny. Came back to find that my Rocket had died and that my Chilli plant had shed all its leaves and didn't look to good. I've since watered it and the Chillis are growing just fine on it still, but it just doesn't have any leaves on it anymore!

Anyone considered Hydroponics for growing chillis?

i wouldnt bother. you can get just as good growth in large pots of compost.

im actually fed up of my chilli plants, they grew so well and about 10 fruits set on each of them, then every damn flower after that has fell off. none of them will set any more fruit at all

greenfly wont **** off either, i spray everything and one survives somehow and within a day or so its given birth to a load more :mad::mad::mad::mad:

ive got blackfly on mine !!! ive started covering the top of the pot with a shopping bag and using a ziptie to secure the bag around the base of the plant so no flys can get in or out at that point.

hopefully no more flys soon

All my plants that are inside have loads more chillies on them. They're all much healthier plants and have greener leaves. The 3 plants I left outside in my mini plastic greenhouse things are full of holes where loads of caterpillars kept re spawning every day. The fruit also has little brown marks all over them.

I'd grow everything inside next year but just don't have the space :(. That's why I'm considering just having a few plants inside and try and re-use these plants next year to get a head start. This Naga (from the seeds |Nick sent me) has started producing buds but they obviously drop off immediately as its so late in the year. But hopefully it's large enough to keep over winter.

I think I started in march or early april this year so maybe sowing in feb would be better if I do try again?

help i have loads of insects all over my plants that were outside! Look like aphids to me... whats the best way of dealing with them??

nex, bug clear fruit and veg kill the aphids on mine, problem is the gits hide in nooks and crannys like inside the flowerbuds, makes them harder to get rid off.

Can some one please offer advice, I have 4 Jalapeno plants that are abundantly flowering but the flowers keep falling off.

First time I have grown Chillis so not sure if this is normal?

You need to pollinate them, use a cotton wool bud or little finger to swap the pollen from flower to flower, should then fruit and not drop off
