The 2011 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

Hehe question is do you want to be overrun by chilli plants and have chillis coming out of your ears? :p Bit of a catch-22 as you don't know if they'll germinate and when you attempt to correct for any non-germinations they all will..

I have only have three plants here but I started with 5 jalapeno and 5 naga when they started. The plan is to grow them this year again and harvest some seed from them as they'll be three years old this year.

In the first year the jalapenos provided a massive load of chillis. The Nagas only totalled about 6 from three plants. Last year each of the overwintered Nagas put out at least 30 fruit (I think it was something over 100+ fruits in total). I gave away my jalapenos in the first year.

Which reminds me - I must order some Chilli Focus for my over wintered plants.

With plants that you've grown from seed over the year, then move outside - what is your routine for bringing them back inside? Do you prune? I had a cracking harvest last year, but I had a couple of plants that got to ridiculous sizes (maybe over a metre tall!?) and had 10's or maybe even a 100 chilli's growing on one plant alone. These were a touch big to bring inside, and I lost them over the winter (obviously).

Ignoramus here just assumed they were not perennial plants! lol

Is it a good idea to place my small plants in a empty fish tank for some
artificial lighting or do i need to set up something more extravagant?

with fish tank lighting? if so it will more than likely be a spectrum than is of no use to regular plants.

you can use a fishtank but the lights are probably the wrong spectrum if they were specifcly for a fish tank

I was looking to get another light and not use the one thats in there all ready.
Its a 60cm tube light so im sure i can find one that would fit that.

Not really bothered about price its just a neat little unit. I dont really want to build anything i just want to plug and play. I just wanted to know if these would work.

what acid hell linked would be good, i'd probably get 2 of each buld and use 6400k until flowering then switch to 2700k

or only 6400k if you plan to use the free power of the sun later

When you need 2700k do you only need that or a mix. Looking at either 6 or 8 bulb set up. But struggling to find a wardrobe wide enough for 3
Feet bulbs.

probably best with one 2700k for every two 6500k bulbs

i think with chillis the 2700k spectrum is more to do with ripening than growing the actual chilli

Germination has occurred :D

Not in my cheapy compost filled tray, but in the chinese takeaway and kitchen paper set up. On day 3 :)

Some fish tank bulbs are designed for growth in aquatic plants so you may be lucky

generally they use a light spectrum that is useless for regular plants though.

most flouresent tubes are 3500k which is perfectly fine for general growth
most CFL's are 2700k which is perfectly fine for flowering
daylight CFL's are 6500k which is perfect for leafy growth.

a lot of fishtank lights are way out at 10,000k which i think is almost useless to regular plants but great if u want to grow coral

Has somebody on here sent me some seeds? I've just got a small bag of seeds with a note saying "Got enough to spare, Enjoy x"

LoL, nice if you wanted them (not me btw)

Anyway Stuart just sent your so they should be with you early next week

I wish the seed fairy would send me some too. Even though I have enough to keep me happy at the moment :)

I wasn't seeing a great speed during germination, so i upped the temps by putting the propagator (it's heated but doesn't seem to be that warm) on top of my wii!

I know this could damage the wii, but my wii is starting to artifact and we have one downstairs that my mam won on O2 awards!

Now I've got

6/6 Jalapenos germinated and looking happy :)
3/5 Scotch bonnet reds germinated.
1/5 Cayennes have germinated. But these take longer according to myfolia.com .

I will upload some pictures when I get home from work. :)

Could I use reflective (Diamond) mylar as a reflector at the back of my grow light instead of a proper reflector? I can't see any reason why this wouldnt work, and would be a lot cheaper than paying £20-£30 for a bent piece of aluminium.

Heres the stuff I was thinking of getting, plus some extra to line out a box to put the seedlings in.

I'm just going to put them under the light for a few hours a day so they dont get too scrawny. Then once the weather starts to warm up then will be going on the window sill.
